Flywheel to keyed shaft adapter

I'm looking to make a shaft that bolts onto the flywheel of a Kubota engine. Has anyone had any luck here? I'm thinking of loading a 1inch shaft and a plate into a lathe and friction weld the two together. It sounds good on paper, but I've never done anything like that.

Friction welding is a lot harder to achieve than you think and it wouldn't be my choice....getting the flywheel out of balance will have rather severe consequences.

I have only seen a flywheel explode once when on a balancing setup and parts went through a block wall without slowing down. (note - tell the guy who will be balancing your flywheel that it's from a 3600 rpm diesel, and not a 14,000 rpm F1 motor).

Better to turn up a shaft that will bolt to the flywheel using longer bolts so you don't need to drill into it.

Do a search for Kubota shaft adapter. They are available and usually on garden tractors/agricultural/golf cart type suppliers.
The flywheel should already be drilled to SAE standards to accept various shafts so you might find another make that will fit as long as it conforms to SAE.
From a brief search the US seems to have more choice than we have in the UK.
Should be a 6 1/2" circle similar to a car wheel BCD or PCD.
Once you check the dia and know that is definate you can search for any adapter with a 1" shaft with SAE of 6 1/2"(or whatever it actually is)
You should have the 5 bolts holding the flywheel on and outside of that you should have 5 holes already threaded to accept the drive adapter.
Use the correct hardened flywheel bolts not just universal bolts.
The 1" shaft is usually the setup for sprockets and some cvt's but check which components you are planning on using as some CVT's are a taper fit!!

Both d722s and the z482 I had came with centrifugal v belt clutches mounted to the flywheel. These clutches come apart easy (a few bolts and a light press fit section) and you will be left with a splined shaft attached to the circular flywheel plate (one piece). There is enough meat on that splined shaft for it to be turned down to 1 1/4 inch max diameter, then a keyway put in it. The inner diameter of the splines is just over 1 1/4 so you could turn it down to that or anything smaller. I had trouble find a proper stub shaft and those clutches seem to be plentifull and cheap as many people discard them, around here anyways.
