Newbie from north east England

Hi all,

I made a few bikes before, but now I feel it's time to make a diesel one... I'll probably ask plenty of questions... I have no real plans yet and it will be slow build (due to money reasons)... I want to be able to do 80mph on what will be a custom cruiser frame, any suggestions or tips are more than welcome... If there is anybody in northeast England that wants to show me there creation just pm me...

Hi Rudi & welcome to the forum. 80mph? You'll need a higher revving car engine I suspect to achieve that rate than an old pump or generator engine.

A Kubota triple 940cc with a turbo would do nicely ! Search facebook for " Dethmachine fabrications " for some excellent examples !!

At the moment very much just in the planning/designing/ head scratching stage...

If you are thinking of a car type engine a chop/cruiser type frame will certainly have plenty of room.

That's the main reason for the chop (and i like them)

If you look at the triump rocket III that's got a massive engine.

Get a frame with a v5 as it will save a lot of hassle.
I presume you will be going the shaft drive route or are you thinking of across the frame with chain drive?
Only problem with across the frame and a car engine is that the drive will be off the end of the engine meaning you may have to have a jackshaft arrangement to bring the drive in to alignment with a gearbox.

Yeah, frame with v5 is a must

The gearbox is depending on the engine I end up using.

I was thinking of belt/chain to the rear wheel as it's easier to change the gearing

I've seen a shaft to chain converter on here that should help with the alignment

I never thought that far down the line yet...
