Robin Engine Questions

Post by brucey »

Oh, it was going to be so simple!

Having resurrected my Yellow Peril Replica Build I realise I have loads of photo's of a finished Robin Enfield but none showing the inside of the primary drive!

Can anyone help with the following:
1. Can you confirm that Robin Enfield's (or Matchless's) have the engine bolted directly to the new base plate and it is not rubber mounted. I'm assuming no rubber mounts.
2 Is the Robin (DY42 Electric Start) Generator used or the Enfield one inside the Primary Drive Case. I'm assuming a standard or up rated Robin alternator is used and the Enfield one is discarded.
3. Is the Flywheel skimmed on the outer face? As this seems the only way to make it fit under my modified Robin Cover which also holds the Enfield Primary Drive Back Plate, I'm assuming yes. I have machined 10mm off the face (2.6kg from a total of 17kg Kg Flywheel. It took a while! Were the cooling fins also removed on the Robin Bikes? If so, how?
4. Is a special Robin Output Shaft made to attach the original Enfiel Duplex Primary Drive Sprocket to? Again, I'm assuming yes. I have something with all the Robin Conversion bits I got that looks close but a photo would be good!
5. Is the original Primary Drive Chain Tensioner used? If so, how is it mounted?
6. The original petrol engine had the gearbox attached to it. I'm assuming you don't do this with the Robin diesel engine and just rely on the remaining fixing points!
7. How is the Robin Engine Top Mount Attached to the frame (see photos in build thread). I want to keep it as close to the original as possible but have no photos of this with the tank off.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm struggling with these details!

Bruce.

Now this reply is going to annoy you :D

When I started building my MZ Robin I was contacted by someone local to me who used to work at Redbreast Engineering and he offered info/help.
I didn't take up his offer and I never met him.
I have scoured my old emails/posts but I can't find it.
Sorry I can't help but I have put out a message on a couple of local sites so if I hear anything I'll get in touch.

I've asked Tony Dymott to help here but had no reply as yet. You never know, he may get back to us..

Might be worth a call to see if they still have it.
Nice museum more like an old motorcycle shop as they do repairs and sell the odd bike.
It's located in the old railway goods yard just under the bridge.
Nice area for a day out anyway

Many thanks for your responses, they are all appreciated.

Stuart,
I spoke to Tony Dymott a couple of nights ago and he was very helpful as ever. His Robin Matchless is similar to the Enfield. He has cleared up the base engine mounts (mounted direct) but uses a different primary drive and gearbox
I was a bit concerned when he said his standard 30w generator had been changed for a 180w unit. I have no idea where to get one or if my existing one can be upgraded.

Gilburton,
I spoke to some people from Robin Redbreast about 3 years ago but I think they were a bit peeved that the business had gone into administration. I didn't push my luck!
I may take my wife for a little drive to Norfolk. I work on high speed trains, so the old rail yard should be interesting!

Pietenpol2002,
Thanks again, I'll take a look at the website.

Don't get too excited about the old yard it is just that and the railway is still operating.
Ring them first and they may be prepared to help you out if they still have it as the facebook pics were 2013.
