Trike conversion
Now that I'm partially paralyzed,I need more stability, so I'm converting my bike into a trike. My design is simple and relatively cheap. My only concern is the durability of the 1" axle peerless 100 differential. It is rated for the weight and hp, but probably not the speed or tire diameter I would like to use.

I would have thought that the diff would only be doing very much when the wheels are rotating at different speeds - in a straight line, it's all locked up and so long as the bearings can handle the torque without collapsing - which seems very unlikely - you'd be OK. So the way to kill it would be to have *really* long half-shafts / wide wheelbase and go as fast as you can on full-lock. Or use two rear wheels of different sizes. Or try to do trick-riding with one rear wheel off the ground As you're not going to do this, then it should stand up OK, I would have thought.
(That last one - one driving wheel off the ground - comes to mind as something my friend with a Ukrainian Dnepr MT16 with sidecar wheel drive, tells me one really mustn't do - it kills the diff, since the planet wheels start wizzing round like billy-oh rather than just correcting minor speed differences between the two outputs).

Well I'm street legal again. Went riding yesterday. Only quirk is that it pulls somewhat to the left because the axle is 3 inches off center. May put a wheel spacer on short side. I was going to use the sprocket as my brake disk but I don't have enough room. Trying to use a Honda Civic disk from another project.

Well done. You're a stubborn man. Good for you. Course make sure that stubbornness though does not put others in a bad spot.
Side note to to mull over..... Esp. for someone with limited mobility. They say Reverse. trikes are way more stable and safe than a Rear Trike.

Trying to put a rear brake together. Was adapting a Honda Civic brake , but going back to original Suzuki rear. Since I didn't make a integral chain adjuster, I'll be making a chain tensioner. Now that I have a "smart" phone I can log my data with gps.

Wrapping up the rear brake. As soon as my new, longer diff bolts show up I can button it back up.

Finally got to ride today. Rear brake line somehow got severed ang chain link almost broke, so I'm waiting on parts again. My gps app malfunctioned or I averaged 79 mph. Lol.

The peerless has already failed, but I think my bearing support was inadequate. I've built a much stronger structure for the next one.

I've been searching for a compact differential solution for quite awhile. So far the best I've found are from garden tractors. I'm hoping to win a diff with axle on eBay. Cub Cadet has been the best vale so far. The set up I'm trying to buy is a two piece diff with 30mm axles. This is the preferred setup for pulling competitions. They put up to 60hp through them!

You need some kind of damper/bushing between the sprocket and axle/diff.

My cub cadet axles ate too short so I'm making new ones. I'm also rebuilding the rear framework to accommodate dual rear disks via kart rotors and Suzuki katana calipers. Hopefully I'll hav pics in a week or so. Forever waiting on parts.

And kart hubs.

Here's a grainy video of my bike and my latest result. Top speed has dropped off with my shorter tires. My max rpm reached is 3200 and my CVT is fully shifting according to my sharpie line on the driver. I've lost 5 mph and not sure how to get it back.

My best trike run so far. My goal is 50 mph top speed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the fastest run would be one in which the final drive and shifting of the CVT was such that the engine stayed at its 3600 rpm horsepower peak? My RPMs never get past 3300, so I'm wondering if there's a little more left.

CVT will never be ideal without electronic or manual actuation. You will have to compromise:
Holding maximum RPM for power/speed, but very high RPM for takeoff and low speed maneuvers.
Low takeoff RPM and good economy, but "shifts up" early and limits top speed by lugging the engine.
Mine for example will equalize belt speed with the engine (stop slipping) at 13mph and can hold 3400-3600rpm up to 40mph, where it "locks up" to it's top ratio and acceleration is very slow to 60mph.
If I lighten the pucks to raise the "locking" speed the engine is always at high RPM at low speeds.
If I lighten the pucks too much the engine speed stays at maximum with little acceleration (loading of the engine).
So far, I have machined 3 pucks lighter to give an in-between 2000rpm of the factory 1900 and 2100rpm engage speed options. 40-55mph is slow going, but if I can get to 55-60mph I can maintain it easily due to engine speed being in the power range.
What I would like to devise is a manual control for the drive pulley using the bike's clutch lever and cable. A clutch throwout lever with a sealed/greasable bearing would work. The drive clutch would then be weighted to a higher than normal mass to work as a "booster" but still allow the throwout to control the sheave.
A side benefit is that it would allow the CVT to operate the engine as a brake in deceleration instead of fully opening to idle.

Getting very close to my goal. Been lightening to pucks to slow the up shift. My RPMs are finally getting close to 3600. Next run will be with 5/1 ratio.
