Robin Enfield Yellow Peril Replica Build

Post by brucey »

After a lot of thought I have made the decision to build one bike with the Robin Redbreast parts I bought from EBay last year. Bearing this in mind it seems fitting that I should make this bike as closer copy as I can to the iconic 'Yellow Peril'.

I already have most of the parts and will use the original 'pattern parts' to build the bike.

The donor bike will be a 2005 Enfield Bullet Trials (see photo). It's not quite so pretty in the flesh, but most of it will be refinished anyway.
I only have 2 photos of the Yellow Peril so any further information would be most welcome. (see photo). What are those 'Microlon' stickers on the side? I have ample 'Robin' stickers with my parts.
My plan is to have the bike finished so I can ride it to next years 'Big Knock'.
I'll keep you posted on how I'm getting on using this thread.
I'm currently stripping 2 Robin DY 42 engines to make 1 really nice electric start unit. I know The Yellow Peril had a DY 41 engine, but I was seduced by the extra 3bhp! and it looks identical in the bike.
Let the fun begin.

Nice project.

I seems like the Microlon additive is to do extra lubrication for the pump and injector , see:

I'll have you know my mate Wes (originally from Salford) is rebuilding the engine with his 14 year old Son. He posted the photos.
I have given him a knackered (e bay rip off) electric start engine and a really nice (e bay bargin) DY42 pull start engine. He is going to make one nice electric start DY42 from the two.
I'm not saying he's keen, but he is buying a Soada Blaster just to get an 'as new' look to the engine casings!

Yeah, the plan is to have a fully functioning, as good as new, electrics start, diesel masterpiece (Aim high) Just in the process of ordering the soda blaster just to give it a nice finish and bring it looking new. The original electric start engine hard a knackered big end bearing, and scored the barrel and leaving the piston a bit worse for wear. The donor engine has all th bits we need, I just have to get the old casing cleaned up and then transfer all of the internal gubbings across to the, what will be as new casing. My son is helping (mostly taking lead) looking forward to getting it all up and running. I will keep posting as it progresses.

Engine so far,

The Soda Blaster turned up so it was off to blasting heaven. I bought a cheap play tent for a tenner to do the balsting in and closed up the doorway using packing tape. This left a nice little port hole to work through. See pics. Engine came up good, so it is wash down and rebuild time using the parts from the doner engine :-)

Hi, it's been a while!
After many other projects interrupting and the arrival of my first Grandchild, my Son and I have resurrected the Yellow Peril Replica Project Build.
I seem to have collected a number of DY 42 engines and am ready to build a nice shiny electric start one. I have loads of photos of finished Robin Diesel Enfield's but am struggling with the internal modifications. I have attached some photos of the dry build we are doing using a spare engine, the conversion parts in my possession and my donor bike. If anyone has a Robin Enfield and can advise I would be most grateful.

I have the following questions:

1. Does the outside of the flywheel have to be faced off to fit inside the case? If so. how much? I'm assuming the inside is left alone as it houses the generator and ring gear for the electric start.
2. Do you use the generator from the diesel engine? If so, does it need to be upgraded to power lights etc?
3 Does another bracket need to be welded onto the top frame tube to bolt the top mount to?
4.Does the output shaft just drive the primary drive (Enfield generator discarded). Is this a special part (I have something with a similar thread with my conversion parts).

I was going through the publicity posters I got with all the conversion parts and discovered the Yellow Peril was actually McLaren Racing Papaya Orange! I've been trying to find out the colour for 4 years and the answer was sitting on my wardrobe!

There seem to be a number of variants but I guess a 'yellowy' one is required! The photo of bike outside Ernie Dorsett's house looks orange whilst the one in the museum (presumably the same bike) looks yellow!
