Specialist Components Pin Outs..help

Post by touchwoodsden »

I am building a Smart Diesel engined BMW K100. I’m a former mechanical engineer (turned into a solicitor in later life) and the mechanical side fears me not.
The diesel side however fills me with dread and the electronic side of the Common Rail makes me quake and break into a cold sweat.
I’m going to bite the bullet and buy the Specialist Components ECU and Simon has kindly sent me the pinouts. However it might as well be in Russian.
I know that he will spend time on the phone explaining things but until I have actually bought the unit from him, I don’t want to be a pain in the backside (I will save that until later!).
Some of the connections are obvious such as Crank Sensor and Coolant Temp Sensor and Pedal Connector but what is Chassis Interface? Earth?
Battery Voltage Direct (1) is that permanently live? If so, why doesn’t it say that?
Is Ignition Key input (2) ignition key switched live? Looking at number four number five and number six it appears that there is another unit here, the driver module. However I’m not certain what the reference to Notes are compared with the Smart ECU Destination.
Moving swiftly on to 30 and 34, does that mean there are lots of wires go to that one pin?
There is a Note: Oil press sw to Chassis Interface. What does that mean?
What is the reference under 35 to Plug Assembly?
The PC comms connector: what is all that about? I guess that when it plugs into the PC but it doesn’t make sense at this stage.
I think I might be almost inclined to give the completed bike (all mechanicals finished) and a wiring loom and the Specialist Components ECU to someone who knows about these things and pay them to connect everything to where it’s supposed to be connected to.
Any volunteers?

I will take a swing :)

1 yes. I think.

2 For ingnition, starting the check and running glow plugs and the likes.

4,5,6, are the wires that command the injectors i think. I imaging the "drive" unit for the injectors handles the power bit and the signal comes off 4,5,6 from the ECU.
I think the Injection driver module is something that's part of the engine. So 4,5,6, need to be wired (i think!) to 23/8/22 on the IDM injection driver module.

Do check the IDM connector tab in that excell sheet. It links up with the 23/8/22 there.

30 to 34 all are sensors that require a voltage to work. So all the basic 5 volt i think from this file. Not sure about the details though.

I guess having a common ground for the sensors could explain that.

The PC comms link up to the USB cable i hope. Somehow.

Aha. Thanks Bert. So it isnt just me that is struggling to understand this. Methinks an idiots guide is required.
