Smart Engine and "bits" cost?

Post by touchwoodsden »

How much should I be paying for a Smart Diesel engine with all the ancillaries? There is a left-hand drive one on Ebay at the moment which is not far from me so would be ideal. Its done a hundred thousand miles but that doesn’t unduly bother me. It’s on a Y plate. Grand plan is to pop it into a K100 Beemer mounted upright, although "pop it into" might be an understatement.

He wants 1500 quid for it but I think he’s a bit of a dealer. I was thinking of offering him a grand. Is that too much? I would prefer one in a car because then I get all the electronics and ancillaries and I know that it runs!
He says that he spent 600 quid on the service which seems rather odd as it’s up for sale! It says it had a new alternator, water pump, and all the usual oil filters et cetera. To my mind, if it needed a new alternator and water pump they were knackered in the first place so all he’s really done is put it back to the condition that it should have been! Otherwise, he would be selling it with a knackered alternator and a knackered water pump!!

Any feedback on this would be really appreciated. Thank you

It costs that because he has to pay a guy to un-pick the loom from the car along with the bits. It's all time & money. Buts that's too much for an engine of that mileage. I'd only launch into that project if you have sourced as ecu. That will be the only stumbling block I think.

It's a complete car and he is a dealer judging by his name.

I don't know what a standard Smart ECU will do without all kinds of stuff that's on the car but will not be on the bike, like a gearbox. It's designed to talk to the gearbox, what will it do if it does not get it's desired answers?

It also needs things like the EGR, ABS, stability control, etc to communicate with.
