Water injection nozzle

Post by UAofE »

To put water injection on my 416cc Kubota I need a really small flow nozzle. The smallest W/M injection designed nozzle I can find so far is a 25cc/min designed for a direct injection kit, but its still twice as big as my engine needs.

If somebody knows a source for a nozzle that would atomize 8-15cc/min at 100psi I would be very grateful.

I've heard of them being made out of medical needles epoxied into a fitting

Wouldn't that just make a straight stream?

all I know is it has been done but higher PSI than syringe? Ask a pharmacist? Check into MAD? also. This is a device added to end of syringe for misting medication into nasal cavity.

here is an article (not using medical needle injector) that might offer other insight http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&A=2720

Where did you get your info on determining Water/Meth injector size for your engine? Might be helpful info for others here

Experimentation with my Mercedes 300D, good ol' fashioned math and the turbo calculator linked below.

Since the Kubota is IDI with a 24:1 CR, similar to my Mercedes, it won't handle a 50% methanol ratio or higher injection quantity like a DI diesel.
My Mercedes makes about 147hp at the wheels with 280 cc/min and 33% methanol. At 335 cc/min I was hearing detonation.
If I go by total CFM, that works out to 20 cc/min for the Kubota. But being things aren't linear, it has a higher CR and the calculator below showed an unrealistic temperature drop, I reduced my target to 10-15 cc/min.

Without WI the turbo alone at 5psi is enough to keep me at full 9.5hp up to 9000ft (2743m) altitude.
The main goal of WI for the Kubota is carbon removal and EGT control, especially since these little engines aren't designed for automotive use at changing speeds. Additional power from burning the methanol is a bonus.

Thanks good input. Some of my marginal knowledge comes from running a unimog with the OM617.952 turbo transplanted into it. Was setting it up for WI for cleaning like you (because of WVO use) and propane fumigation for long up grades when on the road.

If I can't find a suitable WI nozzle, I will likely try propane.

I used a windscreen washer jet nozzle, and melted the front, then created lots of small holes.

I then controlled the flow using a zip tie on the feed line. Nice and simple.

Or you could build a small bubbler (waterpipe styled provision) and let the engine breathe part of its air through that. That way, you will get a very fine mist. It WILL evaporate the methanol first though, so not suitable for water-meth mixtures.

Another option for water only, is a 12v ultrasonic fogger.
