Morning All,
I'm trying hard to make the time and get back into this group and kick-start my own Diesel Conversion. But where to begin! Which road to take!
I could spend an age going through all these posts here, but still need a clear cut plan of sorts.
I want to do it myself, as much as possible at least. The well publicised Yanmar/Clone 486 is a good starting point, but I'm put off by it's, alleged, lack of ooommmph'...?
Can anyone in South-East England offer me a test ride of a 486 to see if it really is for me?
My Bullet 500, owned for over 5 years, it's engine 'terminated' big time in September, and rather than spend what could be well over £600 on a basic rebuild, I really ought to forget that and put the money into getting my own Diesel conversion under way. It's a done thing, as I've recently replaced the Bullet already with it's Anti-Thesis, a Zed 1000ST....? This is a wild bike, strictly for weekend warrior pleasure and the occasional blast to work, but it's pretty juicy too. So the RE sitting out in the back yard, is a much better proposition for long distance trips, especially with a potential of 120+ mpg.....I need some inspiration and more advice from here, and if there is anyone in the South-East, that would be even better for a meeting of minds.
Has anyone here actually got some written plans to follow! That would be useful.
Really do want to get this plan started for 2015 and actually turn up at the Big Knock on a Diesel for once!
Cheers

Re: Where to begin?
if you go more oomph.... you'll need to improve the brakes would you not?
There is a build going on with a 2cyl water cooled Kubota.. and a few others I think have gone that route too. Those would be good projects to look closely at also.

Indeed. Don't forget, the bike was always good for nearly 70mph with the petrol engine, and brakes, well maintained and set up, work just fine.
I know the extra weight of the Diesel, and the 'run on' characteristics will need looking at.
Practical help is everything though. Sure I'll get there one day.......
