Tachometer options

Post by redlined_b16a »

Im looking into tachometer options avalibe for these diesels. My 186F(yanmar L100 clone) is in a boat and for me to be able to get the prop size and performance correct knowing the rpm she is currently turning under load will determine if I can increase or decrease prop pitch or size to get the best out of the engine and the boat.

Is there an electric model avalibe or a mechanical.A google search turned up nothing related to these lil diesels

very nice.

Intresting that it picks up its readings from the fuel injector line.I wonder if something like that can be made.

Thank You

Sure it can. And for only a few bucks. You'll be triggering it off the flywheel which simply means entering the flywheel diameter instead of tire/wheel diameter.

Above is the cheap and ugly version. But, if you're looking for something a little more elegant, see below. The accompanying instruction sheet notes the various ways it can be triggered.

I have been using this solution for quite some time, it turns out to be working ok:

I got an alternator with a wire for tach, a starter/alternator shop can do this for you too, or I seen how to do it on line, can't remember where, just decided not to use a tach, e bay has these alternators and others under yanmar etc. I know your set up might not be able to use this but thought other people here might be interested. This is not the same alternator as mine but you can see the blue wire, I think they call this connection " W "
