Although it's a fair bit more work, there may be a couple things you can do to keep the frame stretching to a minimum, and be able to use regular handlebars. You can probably mostly eliminate the need for the arched backbone by lowering the engine between the downtubes, remembering to leave sufficient road clearance. This would involve cutting off the downtubes and widening them to clear the bellhousing. This of course would result in misalighment of the gearbox and driveshaft. This could be resolved by relocating the swingarm mounts downward. If your rolling chassis is a Ural or a Dnepr, you can likely shorten the swingarm and driveshaft a couple inches to further reduce the stretch.

Hay Sumo!

Looks like your build is getting along really well. Will be great to see the end product, its looking really solid frame wise.

Cheers

Sumo,
I may have missed it in a previou posting: is that a 3 cylinder Kubota? If so, what HP? Nice job so far, should be a good runner. BTW, I'm interested in the details around mating the engine to gear box should you get the to post details.

Intresting adaptors. Must save those photos for my project. I have Dnepr gearbox, at this point. And have no idea how to mate twin onto it.
that should do it

SUMO's adapter is constructed using basically the same method I used to mate a BMW gearbox to my Daihatsu D950, the difference being I made mine from 6061 aluminum. Also, I fabricated the two rings from 3 inch 6061 flat bar (cheaper than buying two large aluminum plates). Because of the distortion caused by welding, I made the plates extra thick, and once the welding was finished, I took the adapter to a machine shop where they machined the two surfaces so that they were flat and parallel to each other. It doesn't take much runout to cause premature wear and failure of the gearbox splines.

Great job SUMO, looking forward to the next project update!

yep - i saw your ali version - i cant weld aluminium though so steel it is...

using 6mm plate and doing the same - getting it machined parallel after fabrication.

My project needs extra flywheel since engine output is on the other end of original flywheel. So less vibrations? Or nearly mission impossible?
that should do it

Sumo,

How are you coming along on the build. I have been watching this thread and the one on Brit Chopper hoping for the additional build details and updates on progress.

Your project has me thinking about doing a Ural Diesel build. Any additional info/photos you can give about the conversion using your Kubota and Ural would be greatly appreciated. I am really interested in the adapting of the Ural clutch/transmission to the 3 cylinder diesel.

Best of luck!

been slow - just a load of other stuff on - you know how it is im sure

tank cut and hacked and butchered - needs plating back in now but the general idea is there

new front wheel in, spaced, new bearings and twin disks up front. i have just over 1/8" clearance either side of the caliper so its a cozy fit but a miss is as good as a mile so its a result - i dont think it looks too bad - this is not going to be a pretty bike by any stretch of the imagination anyways. just need to weld 4 tabs on the lowers to bolt the calipers to and thats an easy mod dealt with

SUMO - how did you align the Ural gearbox with the Kubota engine for tack welding the adapter plates to the tube???
