Interesting breakthrough in injector develpment that would appear to hold promise for both efficiency and meeting emissions standards. Perhaps the most telling quote from the article - "You can hold your hand over our injector and not get hurt".

Sounds interesting! I wonder if it uses an ultrasonic principle to vaporise the fuel rather than using very high pressures.

Doesn't sound like it. Says they mostly changed the tip of the injector to something like the head of a shower? Also said something about them working like medical inhaler's. Those are not ultrasonic.

Water injection and Water collection for closed loop cooling....... wonder if they are using something like http://www.dieselcraft.com/engine-oil-cleaning.php to separate the water back out of the oil to use for cooling.

I was under the impression nebulisers had a ultrasonic element in them. Like those water misters

It sounds like the injector needle may now be a flat headed piston with a groove cut in behind the head probably twice the width of a circlip groove. Fuel fills the groove and as the injector moves backwards and forwards there may be some sort of transfer chamber to allow this small amount of fuel to be fed to the head of the piston (needle) which then squirts it out through the redesigned nozzle.
If that is how it works then the mechanical side becomes a lot simpler to manufacture and should operate at lower pressure.
Imagine a very very small two stroke cylinder and piston with the cylinder head looking like a watering can head.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Ultorasonce nebulisers that have an ultrasonic aspect to them have been around since the 60's and sounds like his company's designs are newer than that but I could be wrong....... Honestly though; I was thinking of other mist medical devices but in re-reading I see he pointed out specifically the nebuliser. So you could be right; though there is a quote of him saying “The only thing we're changing is the geometry of the tip of the injector.”

Either way, it will be intesting to see if it stands up to production, and actually works!

There is a nice YouTube video of how an injector works. If the redesign is similar to my last post then the benefit would be lower fuel pressure maybe less noise and possibly more tolerant of contaminated fuel and marginally cheaper to produce. Even with modern machine tools grinding the point on an injector needle to get a fluid tight seal to stop leaks when being pressurised is no mean feat. Nobody wants a dribble at the end.

Modern injectors are now getting very expensive so it would be good if a cheaper (better) type was produced especially if it could be retrofitted.
