Harley Punsun Test Ride
After much dragging my heels and feeling rather ashamed at other folks seeming ability to knock a bike out in very little time ive finally finished the Harley and ridden it.
First impressions very promising but now the fine tuning starts.
Im running a comet duster clutch with the 94 pulley and currently have the final drive geared 21f and 51r. Despite the tall gearing i could only promote belt slip when either attempting to wheel it about at walking pace in a controlled fashion getting it around the obstacles and ramps needed to get to a road. Or i detected some slip for a second or so when giving the throttle a fistful from a constant speed.
Although the rear is geared pretty tall it pulled up a reasonable hill without slip and i was able to accelerate up it without slipping. Also I was pretty surprised at its punchy acceleration. OK this is subjective but I was expecting a bit of a slug and it put a grin on my face.
It topped out at around 45mph which was reasonable given that I have the govenor springs set to limit the rpm whilst I put the first few hours on the engine. Also the linkage to operate the govenor cable is a prototype and may not be moving the govenor to max revs. Easily fixed by moving the location of the throttle cable mount a few mm down the lever.
I scored a cheap photo tacho off ebay so I'll be setting too and seeing what Im revving at before making any alterations.
Definatly plan to drop the front sprocket to 19t. Then hopefully its MOT and put a few miles on it and get a proper feel for whats going on before thinking about tuning clutch bob weights and pully springs.
All in all what an amazing feeling riding something of your own design, im gonna grin all evening.

Hey Stuart dont underestimate your contribution by starting and keeping this forum ticking over, without which i would still be struggling.
Stuck the tacho on it today and its pulling an indicated 45mph at 2700 revs, probably a real 38 to 40.
Close inspection shows this isnt enough to engage the highest ratio on the comet rear pully, 0.8 to 1 overdrive.
With the govenor adjusted to 3600 it is looking very promising for a real life 70mph cruise.
No major problems whilst playing about with it so far except the usual vibration nightmare of it constantly shaking itself apart. More locktite and springwashers required.
Thinking a magnetic bellypan to collect stray bits would be useful
