MCN news
Anybody in the uk have a copy of MCN from last week? A few weeks ago some bloke wrote in Techwatch that there was no future for diesel powered motorcycles. So I replied giving him a bit of a going over. I bought the next few issues no result. Anyway last week being christmass I didnt buy one, last night in the pub a mate said he had read my article, but he didnt know if he still had it.

This is what I wrote.Subject: techwatch riding around on diesels
I feel I must respond to the article, I did not know you employed Ostriches as journalists.
Most of the bikes featured on the pages of MCN would have a job to average 40mpg. My Vito LWB van easily achieves this and it weighs 2 tons and shaped like a brick. Bikes are always being quoted as being economical but are nearly always carrying one person and struggle to reach the mpg of most cars & don't come close to diesel cars. You ask why more bikes are not diesels & mention India. Forget India petrol/diesel is 110p a litre next year it is probably going to be £2. I would hazard a guess the ostrich will only lift his head out of the sand at this point. Looked at diesel from a different point of view, you get 30% more power out of a gallon of diesel than a gallon of petrol, so diesels are more powerful than petrol's.A few years ago there was quite a few fog pileups on the M6 most people were burnt to death, from petrol exploding. On a bike you are driving with a bomb between your legs, with diesel the worst thing is you might slip over. Now we will just look at the for sale bikes. Bike 2 years old half new list price 2000miles now that's economy probably lost £5000, £2.50 per mile, & we will forget the petrol, also we will forget the tyres and chains. A guy I know drove from Northcape ( top of Sweden) to Gibraltar in 5 days on a lombardini powered MZ, 150mpg average, he also drove too Northcape and back from Gibraltar.
I own 3 diesel motorbikes of various powers and speeds the largest does 70mph but is no slouch at takeoff. The main thing you have a diesel motorbike for is reliability & mpg. You learn to drive them differently from the petrol wiz/ bang machines you promote. When stopped at lights they just tickover, you dont feel the need to keep twisting the throttle, (whats that all about?)wont they tick over? When on the move the engine is used at full revs, you cannot bust the engine because its goven`d. How long will a Ducati last at full revs? Now engine brakeing virtually non existant on wiz/bang machines pretty dam good on diesels.
Now just imagine petrol £2 a litre & house prices down by 30% your readership might have to swap their wiz/bang adrenaline rush for a day at AltonTowers, no second thoughts keep your head in the sand.
regards Sam.

I dont have the original article now but I will keep you posted on any future articles that appear. Basically the article which was written by someone on MCN was saying there was no future for diesels. I obviously did not agree so I replied with a diferent view. Since then a motorcyclist has replied to my letter saying he isnt convinced as his does between 40-45mpg, so I have written back with my bikes mpg saying it makes his look like he has a leak.
will have to see if it gets printed.
