Good MPG Petrol motorcycles

Post by Stuart »

Along with Honda (NC range) it looks like others are starting to take notice that we want better MPG from available bikes. Here's a small MC from India promising 'diesel like' performance :-)

Good deal. Course is should get awesome mpg cause it's more of a powered bicycle in size; just styled like a motorcycle. Hopefully with correct braking forces for the speed it can reach.

It's a start ;-)
Here are shots of the Honda NC700S and X models, both giving 70mpg (imperial) or more.
There's also a shot of the CB500X which, unlike the NC, actually has an MPG figure displayed on its clock. This bike is 1 day old & owner showed me it's doing 69.5MPG.

My 1961 Triumph 500 would do much more than that, but in those days 4 star was 4/7 a gallon ( four shillings 7 pence) which in new lire is just under 23P

I have a book someone bought me for xmass, "great british motorcycles of the fifties" in it it lists 20 motorbikes, and gives an information panel for each bike. It lists many things, top speed , speed at 1/4 mile, etc. One thing i find interesting it gives the mpg and at what speed. Just to quote one, "499cc high camshaft MSS Velocette"
highest one way speed 82mph, petrol consumption at 30mph=94mpg, 40mph=82mpg,50mph=72mpg,60mph=52mph. Bear in mind this was done in october 1953. Just to give you a little more, "649cc Triumph Tiger 110"
Highest one way speed 109mph,petrol consumption at 30mph=100mpg,40mph=92mpg,50mph=80mpg,60mph=70mpg. tested october1955.
Now tell me what has been achieved in 58 years.

My sentiments exactly Sam, note also often the petrol for ten years or so after the war was "pool petrol" at about 65 octane.

My current Enfield is managing about 95mpg. (carb)

I had to email Motorcycle Monthly editorial because every time they reviewed a bike they attached this 'Tech Sheet' - and it didn't show MPG!
Lets see if it changes with next months edition :-)

:-) The MC industry is a big behemoth & it'll take a lot of persuading to come round to our way of thinking. I'm gonna encourage the likes of Honda who did surveys & finally came to the conclusion that a sizeable proportion of the biking general public wanted MPG over MPH.
I'd encourage everyone to investigate the likes of the NC over the Vstrom etc.
NC is a step in our direction & everyone with more than one bike should own one of these. 75 mpg plus. :-)
