Help!

Post by alexanderfoti »

Working overtime on the diesel bike build and I have hit a small snag.

My air intake had a k + N air filter on it like this:

On the new bike, just above this is the fuel tank:

and so the air filter doesnt fit.

What are other peoples solution to this, I would like to re-locate the air intake pipe, 90 degrees to the left where I can then fit the air filter, in a sort of S shape.

Thoughts?

Ideally you need to make up a plate in the shape of your manifold and weld a tube to it. Then just buy a filter that fits the tube.
An old exhaust pipe with a sharp bend might do it??
An interim solution ,if you have the room, is to drill some new holes in your filter but offset so that the filter is lower down. It all depends how much lower you need to drop it and if the new holes still fit in the inside of your filter element?
You'll obviously need to blank off your existing holes by bonding or pop rivetting a thin plate over them. :D

You could see if you could get one of these?? They come in different intake hole sizes. This one will be too big. I expect your intake is app 1 1/2" or similar??
You can get them from classic car or kit car suppliers.

Another option in the links below that were posted earlier. These drain pipes have a lip on one end that your shopbuilt flange engages to clamp it to the head. The flange is easily made from flat stock utilizing a hole saw intended for wood and chucked in your drill press. Just be sure to use plenty of oil on the hole saw. And your gasket serves as the pattern for the bolt holes.

Unfortunately in the UK our fittings are different and usually plastic. :(

All sorted

I used a plastic collar about 2 inches long.

I heated up the edges and bent the plastic to form a 3 cm lip, at 90 degress to the pipe on either end.

Drilled some holes, a bit of gasket paper and voila, all done!

If I had wood working tools a wood piece would have been easy ish as well.
