Did anyone else notice the Punsen V2 with the CVT on the MGS Power website? It has engine mounts ready to install in a vehicle. From the single picture I can't tell if it's for front or rear wheel drive. I wonder if the CVT could be separated and adapted for motorcycle use. If it's for RWD it would be ideal for a BSA/Morgan/Lomax style three wheeler. Hmmm, if it's for FWD I could use it in my Pontiac Firefly (aka Geo Metro)

Hi Avery
By the looks of the pic you've posted, it looks like a rear wheel drive unit. These engines will go a long way if they hook them up with transmission options. Wonder if you could slot this combo unit into a bike and adapt it. Might be a tight squeeze, but probable I guess.
I think if it was a front wheel drive setup you'd see a differential unit below the gearbox where the CV's slot into.
Cheers

I emailed MGS Power for info. I received a response with basic specs, which indicate it is probably a standard 4-speed gearbox, not a CVT (language problem?). Studying the picture, the shift lever linkage suggests this is a front wheel drive configuration. I intend to email for additional info.
I agree - it would make a great trike powertrain.
Below are the specs from the .DOC file attached to the email reply:
Model:
- CVT gearbox
Type:
- gear engagement type, four shift for
forward (each with synchronizer) and
one shifts for reverse (BS09)
Speed rate for each shift:
- 1st shift:3.428
- 2nd shift:2.108
- 3rd shift:1.379
- 4th shift:1.000
- reverse shift:3.600
Dimension: (L x W x H):
- 437x304x285mm (17.2 X 12 X 11.2 in.)
Weight: 14KG
Lube oil: 85W/90 GL-4 or GL5 grade gear oil
GB13895-92 or no.18 hgperbolagear oil
FYI

it is NOT a cvt. it is a standard gearbox. dealing with frank at mgs, the language barrier is more just a hedge. takes a bit, but points get across. i tried to get one here in the states, and the factory didnt have any to send. i was going to throw it into a shaft bike, or austin car. we'll see if they're ready to produce and ship soon i hope.
maybe you are all right, the shift linkage does suggest front wheel drive, but the box has a distinct rear wheel drive image and looks a bit like a type 9, and i would not have thought this was a cvt, theres no evidence of the usual large pulley wheels.
the engine is wildy similar to the moto guzzi.
considerations need to be made of course as the output shaft rotation is very different on front and rear drive, the diff being in the rear axle or drive unit on a rear drive, and built in the box on a front drive, which in this instance being front drive this box would be a trans-axle.
be nice to put in my trike, but i'm too pezzy, and have to stick with my xud 9.
