Why two CVT's off the differential and not one before the differential? Wonder what this designers intent was.... any ideas?

I saw that setup the other day and couldn't quite figure it out?? As a rear axle it seems no different than a live or solid axle. Can't see how one wheel can speed up when rounding a turn? Lots of traction in a straight line but I don't see any slip factor built in to allow a true limited slip drive for making turns. Maybe that's why the forward CVT's aren't identical, some sort of torque sensing or automatic slippage for turns?

I imagine the amount of power (even though not a lot) was a problem to transmit with one cvt.

That setup is from the 1960's belts back then didn't have that much grip.

Also it's cvt ratio was regulated with the vaccuum of the engine.

Thaks for that. Thought it looked old. Where did that info come from?

Was thinking about that too before you posted. I "think" it will still act sorta normally when turning. Maybe act like a limited slip or posi track at that. Looks as if the differenetial will still "differentiate" thus reducing the rpm of the CVT on one wheel's side allowing that side to go slower or even its CVT slip into neutral and allow wheel to roll free.......

Apparently this is part of a Daft33 auto from the late 60's. The pic being titled daft33.... provided the hint. oh and a similar version was used in their Formula One race car. hmmmmm

Just to add the early Daf's had a centrifugal clutch on the flywheel similar to a large brake drum where the friction pads are thrown out by centrifugal force. The later 66 model daf/volvo were modified to a "normal" manual style clutch and also had a vacuum actuator.
Also anyone who is thinking of an "inline" layout with no gearbox this clutch MIGHT be suitable as it is rather large but it has a bell housing with an outrigger bearing.
Then prop shaft to the cvt or manual gearbox at the rear as in the 340/360 volvos.
I have owned a 44 and 66. The 66 with the renault engine was actually quite good and it was a strange feeling to put your foot down and leaving the engine at steady rpm for the car speed to come up to match the revs rather than the other way round.
They were never exported to the states.
The cvt is a bit bulky for bike use.
Plenty of examples of it working on youtube :)
