Engine weights?

Post by akumabito »

Does anyone have a list of weights for diesel engines commonly found in cars?

Looking at a local auction site, these are the most frequent cheap(ish) diesel cars in my area:

Volkswagen 1.9
Opel/Vauxhal 1.7
Alfa Romeo/Fiat 1.9
Peugeot/Citroen 1.9
Kia 2.9
Chrysler 2.5

I know the VW has been used a lot before, but how does the weight compare to the other motors? (only kidding with the Kia and Chrysler lumps - I guesstimate those to be in the 250kgs range)

The 1.6 is probably lurking around somewhere as well, it clocks in at about 223lb and seems to be about the best balance of size, output, and weight.

Weight is an important factor , but dont forget the amount of noise the engine produces.
If you have to stretch your frame more than 6 cm the bike has to pass the the test in Lelystad.
And one of the checks is done with a dB (noise) meter.
I compared a couple of car engines and the PSA (peugeot/citroen) blocks seems to be the best choice when noise is an important factor

I was referring to an engine not on his list. It's a VW 4. They used to put them into jetta's back in the day. You can find them easily and cheap, a 1.6l Turbo (i don't know if it included the turbo or not) for about 2300$ rebuilt from the web: https://www.gex.com/vw-diesel-motors.htm , specifically, the GX 10853TH .

It seems like a great engine for cheap. Just have to find a CVT that can run that sort of ponies and torque.

Thanks! That's kind of what I suspected you meant because I have an '85 Dodge Omni and the early ones came with the VW 1.6 diesel so it rang a bell. Stout engine!

Best when it's all converted to Bosch mechanical injection instead of electronic but that's sorta complicated to do. Not sure 1.6 was electronic, may have been the last factory mechanical injection engines.

I was going to use one in this Omni to build a 2F/1R rig at one time, still hope to do it some day...?

Yea, not many of the 1.6 around these days. And yea there a lot of the 1.9 without the turbo.

I weighed the 1.9 VW lump and remember it to be about 120kg. I've also moved a Peugeot engine around the workshop and it felt a lot heavier to manhandle about than the VW lump. So be wary if the spec engine weight includes things like manifolds, starte, alternator etc...
Kubota Z482 which is plodding on with unnerving reliability. Three years so far.
1900 Diesel Bike being rebuilt with better clutch control.
