enfield clutch

advice needed on the workings of the clutch, on my diesel enfield. After changing the gearbox sprocket from 19 toooth, to 17, really makes the bike, a lot better to ride & the engine is free now to pull the revs, a very good move, after building the clutch back, with heavy springs, i,m not totally happy with the way the gear box feels. before the strip, the gear box was, pretty good, with feel & most times clean gear changes.

Tonight i have changed back to the old clutch springs, but noticed when the clutch leaver is pulled in, the clutch hub, is being pulled out, with the clutch plates. is this the way the cluch works, or should the clutch hub, be locked tight in place, with only the plates moving ect. Checked the work bench, no parts where left out.

has me thinking a little on this, the atf oil round the clutch basket, was dark grey, when i rubbed my finger round it, not sure if a part is missing, or is the grey oil down to excessive wear.

any ideas????.

Had a deeper look, at the clutch & gearbox today, found the problem & fixed it, all is well now now.

Most Enfield gearbox problems are in fact clutch problems. In my opinion there is hardly enough swing to properly release the clutch, unless you pull it all the way. I replaced the Minda lever by a Guzzi lever, but I'm told you can also do some filing of an Indian lever to remedy the problem.

Furthermore I suggest you check if the basket doesn't wobble, mine did and also the plates were not lifting evenly. With the Dutch Enfield club there is a man who had the 6 plate conversion from Hitchcock and the plates ate into the basket, to the point where it was no longer possible to release the clutch and he got stuck (of course) in traffic on a bridge in the UK.
