Well it wasn't really a bang.. but it has stopped working. I noticed it was sounding a bit funny just before I got to a friends house.
When I went to leave it wouldn't start.
Got out the jump leads to try and fire it up and it would fire every now and then but make strange, scary, kind of scrapey noises... I pulled off the flywheel cover and as I feared there is a lot of desperately unwanted up/down movement (I only wanted to see round and round movement).
I'm guessing its a snapped crank shaft rather than a big end bearing - think I heard somewhere that this is not unknown with the Hatz 1b30 engine. Wondering if anyone knows if I could easily fit a 1b40 in its place? Or where I may get a (cheap) engine from?

I got NOS from cg plant sales. Maybe they can hook you up. I forget where they are at in the UK.
