Hi, I am looking at a 1986 Yamaha Radian
Hi,
Ive been really interested in building a diesel bike for a while now. I been researching a lot lately, but still have many questions.
So, I am looking to buy a 1986 Yamaha Radian 600 for $150 off of craigslist. Then a 10hp Carroll Stream engine for around $650. Any reviews or comments about this engine?
My budget is $1500, but i may be able to push it further. I am looking for a very simple, easy to build, great fuel economy, and a top speed of around 70-80mph would be nice. But if not achievable, that is ok as well. I would like to cruise at 55-65mph.
So, what is the deal with CVT's? or go kart "torque converters"? Arent they the same? Can you let go of the gas and cruise down hill without it braking? Do you lose too much speed going up hill?
Is it possible to use the stock Radian trans and hook it up with a diesel engine?
If cvt is out of the question, what are my other options?
Oh yah, the motorcycle uses a 530 chain, so where do i get a sprocket on a jackshaft that matches the 530?

So, with the engine that I would buy. What is the best CVT that would "fit" that engine? I dont need anything expensive, but it has to be able to cruise around 60mph and have a top speed(if possible) around 70-80mph.

You will only get a 50-55mph bike with 10hp. You can use a Comet 40 series or a Comet Duster they can be had at www.mfgsupply.com look in the go kart mini bike section under clutches. The same 10hp engine is on sale in Canada at Princess Auto this week for $499

Re: Hi, I am looking at a 1986 Yamaha Radian
dont know about the particular Yammy your looking at but pretty much all bikes but Harley and older designs still in production (royal enfield, Dneper, Ural etc) have the tranny INSIDE the same case as the petrol engine. So to use the same tranny you have to saw it away from the petrol engine then have a plate machined to cover the hole, devise your oiling method for it etc. It has been done. Some discussion in here on that.
CVT's can be as simple as the go cart ones all the way up to the ones they use in the mini trucks and micro cars used all over the world. To get an idea in the CVT forum of this board or the net in general search for CVTech website. They have a broad spectrum of CVTs and their site can help educate you on possibilities.

Did anyone else read that as a 10hp STEAM engine, or was it just me?
