This Thursday I'm meant to be setting off on a three week trip around Europe and for over two weeks my bike has sat in the garage. I've fitted a new pump and now have 10 injectors coming, however knowledge on how things work could also help get the bike on its way.
So, two weeks ago she died with possible fuel contamination due to filter failure. I cleaned the injector and refitted but to no avail. The pump still appeared to be working as a blob of fuel would force out the injector line on kick over. The injector also squirts fuel out. A bosche injector tested said the spray was crap but he expected I'd still see smoke coming out the exhaust. I had none.
I replaced the fuel pump with a new unit and had smoke out the exhaust. She was difficult to start but eventually did so and ran poorly (with reduced power) which got worse and worse until finally she broke down and I was recovered home.
First questions:
1. if fuel is coming out the injector outside the engine it is for certain going to go into the cylinder at the 20:1 compression?
2. if any fuel gets into the engine (vaporised or not) will I get smoke on kick - or is it only for particles igniting?
Out of desperation I ordered 10 new injectors from China, the minimum because I have the 418cc engine with the longer (non Yanmar) injector. These might arrive in time (just!) but I'm also wondering how it works. Is it like this:
3. pressurised fuel comes down the middle hole of the three (outside wall) and to the tip. The force pushes the needle up and the fuel exits the 4 holes. The spring pushes the needle back down, closing the holes. If the spring is too strong fuel will not exit the holes. If too weak it could exit before pressure has built and so would 'dribble'.
There is a chance that my new fuel pump is broken. I've less of an idea on how this works
4. can anyone explain how the fuel pump works and what parts could potentially fail?

Pretty sure your engine will be more like old style diesels w/pistons in the IP inside a cylinder to compress the fuel. One cylinder and piston in the IP per cylinder in engine.

Fuel filters are normally rated on the average size of particles they'll filter out. That is nominal micron size. Most diesel filters will include a water separator. With constant differences in atmospheric air temperatures bike fuel tanks are very prone to having water from condensation, that's why so many are rusty inside.
A common 'small' or 'fine' micron rating for diesels is 20 microns rating but for real protection .50 micron is preferred. Some diesel fuel filters are 100-200 micron rating! You may have to go to a slightly oversized filter to flow enough fuel due to restriction of such a fine filter.
Seems like this is a recurring problem regardless of what pump or injector changes are made. As others have mentioned a couple of times, maybe it's time to look at some better filtration? Doesn't take much at all to screw up the pop-off pressure of injectors and even less depending on how small injector orifices are.
Your 20:1 compression isn't enough to work against injector pump pressures with a Bosch pump. Also you might check to be sure the fuel cap vent is clear or try running without fuel cap to see if a vacuum has developed in tank.
Just a caution, not knowing your specific experience, but a fuel injector tip is at high enough pressure to inject fuel into skin, sometimes requiring amputation to fix, so please do be careful when messing with injectors.
