Assistance required

Post by alexanderfoti »

Apologies for the duplicate post, thought this would a better place after I posted the other thread.

I was planning on using the old primary drive case/mount and clutch/gearbox but im not sure its going to fit , as per this image:

Image

Firstly the engine needs to move across to align with the rear chain and the bearbox input shaft/clutch.

Secondly it needs to seperate out slightly towards the front of the bike so that access can be gained to the throttle control and fuel stop screws.

I think I have 3 options:
  • Run the chain/clutch open with no constant lubrication and with a longer chain
  • Convert to belt drive (giving more slack in adjustment and more space
  • Go to a CVT
Now im not a fan of the CVT transmissions (no offence to anybody that is), I just think it detracts from the driving experience so I think im going to go down the open chain (With a gaurd) route unless there is any reason why not,

Update:

After a bit of shifting, I think I have line of sight for an open chain.

Only issue is that there is quite a bit of offset.

Is this too much to be running?

If yes, would I need to employ a jackshaft arrangement, not sure if there is enough space for that...

Thanks for the assistance! :)

Hi Alex
My 186 has the same off set (as its the same gbox ) and surprisingly it has no real effect on the handling, balance to any major degree so my advice stick with the offset.
Cheers Tim

Sit on it and feel for yourself if its going to be uncomfortable to ride. Also if you rest the bike on its wheels and stand it 'on the balance' you'll see how far the bike will naturally be for 'upright'.

As the mass is so close to the centre of the bike I wouldn't worry about it. I regularly carry a full bag of tools in one pannier and it hardly makes a difference.

You could always carry your sandwiches in the opposing pannier. :D
Kubota Z482 which is plodding on with unnerving reliability. Three years so far.
1900 Diesel Bike being rebuilt with better clutch control.

Today I sorted out the engine mounting finnally, so its in its place now, the balance seems to be ok, with the offset location, :) all good! :)
