sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
Building another 3cyl bike. Extensive engine work, going in a rigid frame bobber style bike. It will be 1000cc, turbocharged, around 100hp, turn 6000rpm, and blow the tire off.
Thats all the hints for now. Stay tuned.

Re: sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
6000 rpm?? dats pushing it?? What is OEM redline?
Question is... RPM is king on existing bikes.... but is that what we should be aiming for? Would we be better off putting the energy of trying to raise RPM in these diesels instead into matching gearboxes to the ranges normal for diesels?

Re: sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
Push up the rpm is possible but limited. The engine starts using much more fuel compare the power delivery.
Small dieselengines best torque is about 1800-2200 rpm for some reason. So you have to put your energie in gearboxes and/or bigger chainwheels.
You are showing a nice dieselengine to us.
I was busy with an Hatz dieselengine few years ago, but max rpm 3000 wasn't enough for me.
I think they terminate the production, I can't find any.
Look what a beauty.

Re: sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
This is a build for absolute performance, fuel consumption being a non issue. The injection pump will be delivering 3 times what was max fuel possible from the factory pump. Reground cam will make alot of power at 5000-6000rpm and designed for turbocharging. There is alot of work going into the engine to try and keep it together, and not turn the pistons into molten metal.

Here are a few more pics.
Injection pump with alot of internal modifications to flow a crazy amount of fuel. Injectors opened up to flow more fuel.

Re: sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
Now you're scaring me here. I have this involuntary reaction of squeezing my legs together in anticipation of the moment at which that screaming little rattler sneezes the big one. Maybe flak vests for the legs and titanium cup for the family jewels. In some states I believe I'm mandated to report you for abusing that little thing, aren't I?
Now that we've addressed my fears, I can't wait to see your project unfold. Do keep us posted.

Billet aluminum flywheel, to handle the 6000+ rpm.

Drilled bolt holes and cut center of flywheel. Now i have to balance it to the same (out of balance) as the factory flywheel.

Hey DMF, good to see you're posting your build here too!
I've been following your Thread over on Pirate.
(I'm the Tiger Builder guy you jelped with a question yesterday.)
Gonna be a nice build folks.

I've got another Skunk WOrks Bike in the making that I can't divulge!dethmachinefab wrote:Good to see you here curtis. Awaiting your build thread! :flipoff2:
But after that one is through I'll start on the Tiger. I'm still trying to learn a few things before I tackle it.
Another stupid question. Since you have adjusters on the back wheel, how will you mount the engine and transmission.
What I'm asking is the engine going to be firmly mounted and the transmission on adjusting slots? Or are the transmission and engine going to be non adjustable and just use tensioner pully on the Primary?
I'm leaning toward a solid mounted engine and transmission and using a tensioner on the primary. (If I go belted promaty like yours I'm thinking a Ford Big Block Belt tensioner would work easy. I used one on a gas to diesel engine swap in a Motorhome I did a few years back for an aux ps pump and it works flawlessly.)
Although making the transmission mount on slots would be easy. Just not sure if that would create more problems later.

Re: sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
The cat bike uses a fixed engine, an adjustable idler to take some slack, no primary plate, and trans on slots. This bike will use a primary plate. Engine non adjustable, trans on slots and primary plate holding the fixed distance for proper belt tension. This plate keeps the flywheel pulley and clutch pulleys properly located under load. You would be suprised how much a frame can flex, and can also tear the studs from the bottom of the trans in high load situations.

Re: sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
Thanks. I have been thinking about building an engine and transmission cradle and mount them on. And will use some motor and transmission mounts I picked up from the Isuzu Warehouse in Atlanta a few years ago. It would be easy isolate the frame from the engine cradle with these special mounts.
I'm thinking of using a spring loaded belt or chain tensioner mounted to the cradle for the primary. Sometinh like the cars use to keep the water pump/ alt belt tight on their engines.
I want to make the cradle where it will bolt onto the stock Tiger frame using the standard engine and skid plate mounting points.
I do a lot of tubing bending.
How'd the real axle spindle turn out on yours? Still working on it?
The last time I rode a hard tail I was recovering from a broken back and shattered leg, so it was not a pleasant experience. I had just learned how to walk again. Took me a year and a half to get to that point and a friend let me take his Suicide Shift Pan Head Chopper for a spin. You guys are tougher than I am!

Re: sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
I wonder if using a spring tensioner whether you wouldn't have much the same experience as alexanderfoti reported having using the same. Spring tensioners in applications such as serpentine belts are only loaded in one direction. However, in either primary or final drives they also experience loading under hard deceleration. When that occurs I might think the spring tensioner is depressed and the chain goes slack on the opposite side. And then the fun begins. Or maybe some medication for the spring tensioner.

Re: sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
Just thought I would chime in, I have "fixed" my tensioner now, the wheel is now bolted in place rather than held in place with a spring, this way the adjuster works correctly. I am sure I could have put a stronger spring in there, or played with spring tensions, but I thought I would jump the chase and just fix it. I must keep an eye on wear etc but seems ok now.

Re: sneak peak at the new diesel bike build
Yes, a spring loaded tensioner will cause issues on deceleration. Hard downshifts will slide the rear tire and that force is certainly enough to move the tensioner. Fixed adjustable tensioners work best. You can design one possibly with a small piston and a grease fitting, pump grease until properly tensioned, just a neat idea.
Today i bored, rough cut and installed bearings in the rear hub. The large part will be cut down to size (between rim and pulley) after to obtain proper wheel/trans/pulley alignment.

Cut rear perimeter rotor cut, siting mocked up on some bolts. Will sit more inboard when standoffs are made.
