Greetings all,
I've got some questions for you diesel motorcycle experts.
Is there a tried and tested method for making one's own diesel motorcycle? i.e. is there a particular frame and particular engine? Will this particular combination get me up to highway speeds?
How hard is the procedure? I've done some light car and bicycle maintenance and even took part on an engine swap on an Infiniti G20.
Looking forward to hearing all of your responses!

May I suggest that you first spend some time browsing the two diesel motorcycle websites. There you will likely find most of the answers to your questions and answers to many more questions that you will have in the future:
http://dieselbike.net and http://dieselkrad.info
These two great websites have pictures and details of most if not all of the known diesel motorcycles, under construction and on the road.
You will also find a lot of information on the various discussion groups associated with the sites (links on the sites) .
The design and performance of the motorcycle you build will depend on your budget, tools, fabrication expertise, to name a few. If you want to go fast, it's going to cost more (more power, stronger components, and more robust and complex construction). A factory look will require extensive modifications to the donor frame or a completely new frame, and you will need access to welders, lathe, etc.
There are a lot of diesel motorcycles out there, and there's bound to be a design that meets your criteria. Good luck!

jon,
avery has a great point. researching is the best start. as a fabricator, i begin with what my needs are and go from there. i am currently working on a new bike, powered with the chinese punsun vtwin (22 hp). good size, seems decent construction. my last bike used the lombardini 25LD 435-2 (19 hp) was overpriced, and bulky to fit, but she went in. cant seem to figure how to post pics, but she's up on ebay right now, item # 280156947044 the new design uses alot less expensive bits, as i can get the punsun to my door for $2k or so. busted bikes are cheap and easy to find. a bit of welding magic, and you're off. now gears, again, what do you need? a cvt is a cheap and easy way to go, or regearing for a harley aftermarket tranny. up to you. sometimes old preunits can be found via ebay, and i've mates in the uk keeping an eye for me at all times as well. not sure where you are, but i am in portland, oregon should you fancy a chat, a pint or a ride. thats my bit. step one- usage? and go from there.
cheers
