yanmar clone and Royal Enfield options

yanmar clone and Royal Enfield options
I am wondering if anyone had comments on the yanmar clone and a Royal enfield Bullet. I have both, and I started to weld the mount for the engine with the "Riding on Salad oil" version. I don't have the extended shaft or the chain case. Any ideas where I can purchase? I am ready to roll. I have a 19 gear sprocket and I have the double sprocket from Martin for the engine shaft. Anyone out there that could help talk me through?

Inner primary and extended transmission shaft are available from Jochen Sommer. I ordered through indiabikes but the wire transfer never got into their account so I ordered through Sommer. Lots less hassle, don't have my money back from India but Sommer will have my parts here next week. I am starting to tear the transmission apart to be ready to install the new shaft. I am sure I will have questions soon.

I've done the same conversion and Stuart has popped it on his dieselbike.net website.
Parts are getting a little hard to get, sommer being one who seems to have the required bits n pieces. Shame the India factory cannot make new parts for the Diesel bikes. I've well n truly hassled them out, but no go

Okay I have the extended shaft and inner cover. Sommer did a good job and about the same cost as indiabike. How do I remove the gear on the end of the mainshaft? It seems, from the parts manual that it is just pressed on with another piece pressed before the gear and a washer or inner oil slinger? Do I just put it in a press? It seems to be very tight.

Tim is right on the money, just be careful to press it all back together properly, as I've been told some put the top gear dog around the wrong way, meaning third and forth gear will be selected together. Other than that, if your mechanically minded you should have no probs doing the shaft changeover.
If your really worried about how tight the gears are to press on - freeze the extended input shaft just before you press the gears onto it. I personally didn't need to do it, but it's much better than heating stuff, but this is only my opinion.

Swapping gearbox mainshafts
It's possible to press off the gear by using a vice to hold the shaft loosly and bashing the end with a 5lb hammer - I've done it.
However it's far better to do the close ratio upgrade at the same time to narrow the gap between 3 & 4th gear.
The gears are a bit costly but available by mail order from Hitchcocks, do the kickstart spline upgrade at the same time as you have the casings open, you will thank me at the first hill. Bash this on with a piece of tube till it seats properly against the shoulder and make sure it's the right way round.
Swap the elephant poo grease for 90w oil to increase effeciency, rumour has it the box can swallow 1/4 of the engine's power output, the only place it will leak out is from the output shaft and the clutch pushrod. Order the older style brit type sprocket nut with the felt seal and this will stop most of the leakage. Any oil that does make it out will travel outwards on the sprocket to the chain anyway - so that's a good thing.

Hi for all those using the Yanmar clones for their enfields, I have most of the parts in stock at the moment,
I am waiting for some more long gearbox shafts to come in, but have the inner diesel primary cases. adaptor plate for engine.
I am using the electric start version, and am making a new sub frame to mount it all in.

the main advantage is, that the short axle doesn't need extra support..
As i understood at the Hamm gathering, the Sommer bikes have this bearing inside the primary case.
Maybe not made of the best material to cope with the strain?

Henry does put a bushing in the inner primary too.
Unless you are going to put 15hp plus into the system this should be suffecient, indeed there are Sommer conversions with very high mileages out there.
If you wanted to be extra cautious you could add another support welded to the gearbox/engine bracket.
Just to be clear the longer shafts are about 40mm longer and the Yanma conversion uses a 20mm spacer on the engine casing to inner primary fitting.
So you could move the engine over just 20mm to the right for everthing to line up however this would not be as good as a well supported outrigger bearing between the final drive sprocket and the clutch.
Alignment will be absolutely critical for any outrigger bearing or you could be making things worse.
