TX Tiger's on the road
well...... they were on a trailer LOL.
My two Tigers ventured to a new location south of me. Actually only about 30min from my work. Met up with CCurtis. AWESOME SHOP housing some great diesel projects. Oh and a good ol' (not "old") fella to shoot the shiat with. Had a great time visiting Curtis and very excited about future of our project(s).
Curtis if I didn't say it. Mucho thanx for hosting me Sunday. Enjoyed it.
Maybe I can venture that way Sun this week to do a lube oil change etc. on my golf. Better there than my place since cant get under the car adn well..... chigger's would have a feast on me LOL.

Well done Coach, hope it works out Just did Europe on my new Tiger and it was some ride Well worth investing the time and energy I think. To use the American venacular, I "hauled ass" over 1100 miles and the fuel efficiency and torque were great The original Tiger's are big but these bikes are awesomne, real motorway maulers. They just power on as lesser bikes turn into fuel stations Over-drive is great too!

Re: TX Tiger's on the road
Small Update:
Well, North Texas has some bad weather coming our way, so I unloaded the Tigers the other day and rolled them into the shop.
Had to bump the calipers with a small ribber mallet to free up the wheels so I could roll them around on the shop floor..
I pulled the body work off of one to see what lies underneath.
Man these bikes have a lot of room under the gas tank......
Few parts missing off one but nothing that can't be replaced or made!!!!!
Tested my Diahatsu engine today to make sure it would still run. It does!
Getting antsy to get going I guess.
As soon as I get my other project done I'm going to be all over stripping these bikes and getting Coach down here to knock them out.
If anyone has pictures of Diesel Tigers I would love to see them to keep the motivtion factor up.
You can send them to me off line at CurtisDrew@AOL.com
Later Guys.

Sounds like CoachGeo's bikes are in good hands! I'll be real interested to follow this as I'm planning to use the Daihatsu/Briggs 3cyl [DM950D - DM954DT?] in My Kawi swap. Is this the engine you're shoehorning in there?
Hey, Stuart, I miss the autobahns from when I lived in Europe. Really something to be flying down the straight at 165+ & having a steel blue Porsche 989 scream up flashing his lights to pass, chased by a bright red Biturbo Maser making melodious noises! Both gone from sight in a couple of seconds, ah, yes, those were the days...

We're using a Daihatsu is a 23 HP NA 850cc on one and a Kubota for now.
The Daihatsu will be turning a Ultima 6 speed tranny and the Kubota a European CV if we can get one..
Maybe later We'll go with a Turbo Model.
For now I just want to get them running and all the bugs worked out.

Re: TX Tiger's on the road
Kubota and a Diahatsu? I wish the hell I was using one of those in the one that will be mine but I just got laid off a week ago and not eligible for unemployment till maybe late January.
Need to fix my car right now. Still wont start right after it sits a long while (mornings) but $$$ is not there to do it.
Thinking of going to school to retrain. Next course wont start till Jan. or so though. Might can get in a welding class? I need to build a little word burning stove and a press to turn wood chips, paper and leaves into to logs for burning.
Since pitty parties are a waste of time.. have gotten a lot done on my little home with this new found time on my hands. Mostly manual labor stuff. Some horse trading of an old vehicle and trailer to a fellow that is a tree faller. He will eventually cut a tree cut down for me that puts my home in danger (dead tree), and I also got a so-so chipper out of it to eat up all the limbs and little tree's I've cut. Have started chipping away and forming a compost pile to go with my compost toilet. Will get additional fence post pipe etc. out of it too. Goal is to get a few goats. They will clean the property slowly of tons of brush which includes lot of poison ivy. Have cut a lot of the ivy out myself. Should invest in who ever makes Hydrocortisone since I use so much of the stuff. It keeps me from looking like a swollen pus pocket with legs.
Learned how to use a high lift jack the old fashioned way for stringing barb wire. Also how to use it as a come-along to move a 1,000lb slab of cement. Got slab spun the right direction now just got to move it forward another 10 feet or so. Thank god its got hooks embed in it. Got hooks cause it was a former Ceptic tank cover given to me by another neighbor. Will take all day of jacking to move it but what the hell. Got time.
Got up my car port tent up finally too. Fixed my cheap axe with a new handle so will start cutting down some more tree's to re direct my drive way to accommodate my neighbors fence. Where he put the opening for entrance onto my land is very opposite of how I had planed things. My land is land locked with easement across other land(s). Another horse trade that includes cash; hopefully, might also net me enough gravel to turn my cow path road into a gravel road. Approx 1/2 mile of road. Maybe I should build an off-road motorcycle training area with mud, gully's, a creek crossing (seasonal) slippery leaves, varmints etc.
Sooo... all this is a bit pointless to yall cept that by the time I get it all done I'll definitely have had rebuilt my strength and can pick up a Diesel Tiger with one arm if I lay it down by accident.
forgot to mention the tiny little heart attack I had in the midst of all this too. minor detail.

Coach, I sent you a PM before I read this. I have some stuff about the Tigers we need to take care of.
Call me later @ 4PM. I'm going to take a nap. Was up most of the night with the storms.

Re: TX Tiger's on the road
Hmmmm.... Of course I don't know what type of vehicle but the problem you describe is most often caused by fuel draining away from ?? wherever, so that engine needs to be 're-primed' as such. Can be as simple as a fuel line leak, or a leaking float bowl in carb, or a weak fuel pump not quickly filling carb bowl or providing fuel to injectors or injector pump.coachgeo wrote:.....

If it's carby you can flip the throttle linkage while CAREFULLY looking down carb throat to see if fuel squirts into throat before engine is started [which it should do]. On fuel injected engines with a lift pump I like to install a foot of clear fuel line before injector pump to easily do a visual check of fuel flow or bubbles.
Certain 4bbl carbs had a problem with cracks starting in float bowl, allowing fuel to leak out overnight, requiring a refilling in the morning. Also bad carb castings leaking fuel are not unheard of.
Glad the heart attack was a 'minor' event!

Re: TX Tiger's on the road
It is a Diesel Golf. Thought of lack of fuel too (air leak, start up fuel pump or??) but am hesitant to think that is it cause I get ALOT of unburnt diesel fuel smoke out of the exhaust while trying to crank it. Keeps the mosquito's down thoughXLerate wrote:coachgeo wrote:....

Re: TX Tiger's on the road
Now that's a strange one! I don't know the VW engine well but as a diesel, when it's getting fuel & compression it should start & run. I've heard of problems from fuel return line being clogged or leaking, or from air leaks in injector lines, often due to copper sealing washers being funky. Also bad copper washers at banjo fittings can cause weird troubles.
Hard to believe that injector spray pattern is so buggered up as to cause hard starting, but I'd toss in a can of Seafoam just in case. Could be the pop-off pressure is all screwy on one or another injectors, delivering fuel to injectors but not allowing the [pop-off] pressure needed.
Seems to me the VW doesn't use a lift pump before the injector pump. I wonder if it's in need of one, to give a boost to fuel delivery? My engine uses a Bosch VE pump and prefers a lift pump along with the injector pump for fuel delivery. Is this a high mileage engine? Does it seem to miss on one cylinder or worse when running? Excessive smoke when running?

Re: TX Tiger's on the road
if you are getting unburnt fuel while cranking, could be glow plugs, carboned up rings/ stuck rings not giving enough compresion? hard to diognose via posts on the webs. My IDI TD scirocco has a lift pump where the gas fuel injection pump resides. Do you see bubbles in the clearish lines going to the injection pump?

Re: TX Tiger's on the road
I've not had it happen, but heard that the return line from injectors & pump can cause this problem, including the fuel smoke at start. In effect, if the pressure built up to injectors & pump isn't bled off by return line then you can be pumping against a head pressure or similar.
The engine's maybe getting fuel, but that critical timing event is off. Once it finally gets enough fuel crammed in a cylinder that the compression squish makes it fire it would run rough, stumble, smoke until it cleans out, then run fairly normal but still seeing smoke. Also lousy mileage, and difficult start next time.
Pretty easy to check return line but as mentioned elsewhere here, the pressures can be huge & cut like a knife & inject diesel into body parts, call ya stubby! So please do be extra careful, and see if reurn line is dumping fuel, into a container while cranking?
This not in disagreement with anything else posted, just saying....
And yes, that clear line is invaluable in diagnosing!
