Harley/Ultima Advice w/V-Twin Diesel

Post by TnFan »

I need help selecting a Harley/Ultima Gearbox and related hardware.

I have a Suzuki GS1000L that I want to outfit with a
Punsun 25hp V-twin and a Ultima type gearbox. I like the
bike because it has really good brakes. I figure a heavy
diesel bike needs a good braking system..

I could really use the experience that many of you on
dieselbike.net have aquired.

Please help me with several questions:

1. I intend a left hand drive. What year and model Harley motorcycle should I be looking at
for purchasing the proper Ultima 6 speed transmission?
Soft-Tail, Sporster, Touring, Standard etc.

2. I'd really prefer a chain primary, but I could be persuaded to use a 2 inch belt.
What usa suppliers and models would you recommend?

3. The same goes for the clutch equipment .... usa suppliers and models.

4. I'm concerned about viabration problems. Does anyone have experience and advice
as how to dampen viabration?

I'm hoping this will spark a spirited and interesting dicsussion.
Of course I'll be posting pictures as the bike progresses.

Thanks for all your help, TnFan

Here's the donor bike:
a 1987 Suzuki GS1000L

Fell in love with this bike series as a result of Crazy Jerry's diesel bike project.
Been trying to decide between hydrostatic drive and a Harley gearbox for the
longest time. Finally settled on Harley because it was more "bolt on" and less
custom construction. Check out those brakes!.. Dual disc front and disc rear!
Probably have to lenghten the frame a little. It's a heavy bike, so I'm sure the
tubing is pretty thick and strong. Be posting pictures of the engine soon.

My understanding is... just contact an Ultima Vendor and let him know you want an ultima for a bike project with a left side chain drive along with what ever side your engine's drive will be on. After his answer ask him what bikes this Ultima matches in the Harley world and let us know. Would be a good thing to have in the archives.

I may sell mine and go to CVT butt... it's a right hand drive.

Coachgeo ..... Thanks!
How simple ..... I'm so ashamed I didn't think of it.
Just simply ask.
I did learn something new ..... all the chain primaries and
clutches are wet bath. They run in oil.
I've decided that in the interest of simplicity that I'll go
to route of a belt drive and dry clutch.

You might want to look at what we did...

www.dieselchopper.net

www.wingnutcycles.com

we rubber mounted the motor. we used a chain drive Baker transmission. "6 into 4"

Bearnyc,
Thanks for the tips on how you mounted rubber isolators on a v-twun engine.
What kind of results did you get?
Are they resistant to oil?
