I've been offered a Volvo Marine diesel cheap, that I am considering for a diesel motorbike
currently, it has a seawater coolant system (like most boat engines), but is it possible to fit a decent sized rad (perhaps from a car)?
all I know is its a Volvo 3 cylinder marine diesel with gearbox. and its believed to have a clutch to disengage drive.
it revs to 3,000rpm and produces 30~40hp.
I was thinking about either fitting it with the gearbox transversely and running a chain and sprocket to the back wheel, or finding a BMW cheap and running it as a shafty.....
any thoughts?

3 cylinder marine sounds like bulky and heavy but we'll know more if you post the model

Well having a little chat, the owner thinks its a Volvo Penta MD17
36hp @ 3,000rpm
1.68 litre, 3 cylinder diesel
not the most powerful engine, but I reckon it will have loads of torque...
enough to pull an overall ratio of 3:1 (1:1 top gear with 15/45 sprockets or BMW shaft drive)
that would put the top speed at around 70~80mph depending on tyre and wheel size....
any thoughts then?

I was told that some BMW shaft drives used a 3:1 ratio....
how true it is...I dont know......to be honest, my diesel bike will most likely be chain and sprocket final drive, simply because its cheap, simple, and ratios are easy to change.....
as for that document....I have a feeling that is the correct weight....
290kg plus the rest of the bike.....I think a XUD9 would be a better engine....light and 3 times the power....

Oh well....hopefully a nice diesel will come along super cheap....
currently, the only cheaper engines are car engines....
I would prefer something over 15~20hp and minimum of 2 cylinders....
I hopefully would like to get something built for later in the year, so I can do a run down to friends in spain.
big difference between 40~50mpg of my current bike, and possibly 100mpg (or more) from a diesel....

Look for diesel Diahtsu cars or diesel mini trucks if they are in your part of the world. Forget "cheap" that and diesel dont really fit the same sentence it appears. And cheap.... if you find one cost you a plenty to get it running so.... its not "cheap" either.

Nonsense. Cheap and diesel is perfectly possible. Just watch Mouse build bikes. Where does cheap stop and expensive start anyway?
