Black Friday Yanmar 2v78 special

Post by bearhawk »

For those in the US you know "Black Friday" can mean good deals. For those not in the US, Black Friday is the day after our Thanksgiving holiday. Retailers try to lure customers into their stores by offering goods at very large discounts in hopes the customer will spend their money buying other Christmas gifts.

I bought a Yanmar 2V78 today and it was Black Friday. Pietenpol2002 actually found the engine on Craigslist and he gave me the link. I made contact with the seller and found out he was going to be closer than his home to me during Thanksgiving so I met him at his parents house.

The engine was some sort of test engine in a John Deere F735 Fairway mower. It doesn't appear to be very used but it shows a little sign that it was used mowing briefly. The compression is very good on both cylinders. Nobody knows if it's ever been overheated or had any trouble as there is no history with it. I did get it to fire up briefly tonight but I need to do some work still to get a fuel tank so I can really run it up. At this point it's unknown how good it is internally.

I'll attach some photos if I can get it to work.

I'm not sure if this is going into my Cub Cadet tractor or a motorcycle project...probably a motorcycle project.

OK, I got the fuel lines hooked up with a home made tank and got the fuel system bled. The one cylinder was hard to get bled but I finally got it. I got it running and it seems to run pretty well. Of course without the cooling system hooked up I don't want to run it very long. I made two short videos of it running and put them on youtube.

Also, true confession time. The stop solenoid doesn't work anymore. I looked at a schematic online and it showed the ground wire (black) the hold wire (as red) and the pull (as white). The schematic I found online showed the pull wire going to a fuel solenoid so I figured that was for a pump and was on all the time. WRONG! It's a momentary solenoid. NOTE: only put current to the white wire momentarily or you will be spending $100-140 for a new one. I found out I haven't been the first one to do that. You can take the solenoid off and use your finger to shut it down for a short run but that's about it. You really don't want the crankcase to vent there for long. One could make a mechanical lever easily enough.

Are you considering the Moto Guzzi style set-up like mine or the Harley set-up?

Its freezing over here and the cylinder heads of the Guzzi It keeps your knees from freezing solid :)

I'm thinking more along the lines of harley style. I don't have the bike yet to put it in but am keeping my eyes out for one. In the mean time I'm building up a tractor to keep busy. I have a 12hp from a1biofuel.net going into a cub cadet. I'm using parts of two cubs to make one good one.

2v78 engine and bike are getting closer to being on the short list. I'm finishing up a 12hp yanclone repower into a cub cadet tractor and also finishing building up a Listeroid 6 hp engine to run a generator. 3 diesel projects at once.

Aaah died and gone to heaven.
