Re: Bloody insurance!

Carole Nash could be worth a try - they insure trikes so should be able to quote for a bike, even a modified one. Think they look for a minimum no-claims period before they'll quote you, can't remember how many years though. Also, dunno if you have RAC/AA/Green Flag cover or anything like that, but ...

Re: Diesel engines with rear wheel drive gear boxes

Hmm, not knowledgeable enough myself. If someone here can't help you it might be a good idea to ask a question on the BTW UK site - there's a few folk there will know their stuff when it comes to axles etc for trikes. http://btwukonline.co.uk/ Also try btwireland.com and http://britchopper.co.uk/for...

Re: Diesel engines with rear wheel drive gear boxes

You mean from cars? Any BMW or Mercedes, plus the Vauxhall Omega (which had a 140-ish bhp 2.5L BMW TDS engine). Not sure whether Lexus were rear or front wheel drive. S-Type Jag (think the X-type only came as FWD or 4WD - ditto Audis, VWs & the latest 4WD boxer diesel Subarus). Oh, and the old V...

Re: Mounting a different engine - help please, a bit urgent!

Right, a little update on this. The new seats have been added, but I've had a fair few niggles over the past few weeks, which of course was really just a running-in period after the rebuild - still, I didn't expect so many things to happen in such a short space of time. Read on, if you dare! First o...

Re: Well i've done it now !

Congrats on the new engine, RustyWreck - almost the same one as in my trike (mine's a 1767cc XUDT from a Peugeot 405). Does yours have an intercooler? Mine has, but it needed to be repositioned as it sat too high. I have a spec sheet for the full range of XUD engines on pdf. Ditto for the 1.5 TUD, I...

Cool, there was a guy in BTW UK who'd built himself one with that engine - used to call himself dodge or dodger, dunno if he's still with them or not.

Re: New bloke from NE Scotland

What engine's in the diesel trike?? Have been having sinful thoughts about a big 6-cylinder engined monster for myself too - one diesel trike isn't enough! Had thought of a few options, all from about the end of the 1990s/start of the 2000s - the BMW 2.5 TDS, the Audi 2.5 TDi or the Alfa/Fiat 2.4 JT...

Re: Trikes to consider for diesel transplants

Just occurred to me that I still have my 1.5 TUD - if anybody wants it for a project it's a known working engine. Only has something like 90-95k miles on it (can double-check this). Currently located just outside Antrim town, but will easily fit on a pallet or indeed in the boot of a car. Somewhere ...

Re: Trikes to consider for diesel transplants

My trike is made from a chopped and lengthened Harley frame. Original parts include forks, bars, headstock (chopped & raked out), fuel tank and of course the frame itself which has been extended by a total of about 30cm. Would that count as 50%, or is that fact that it's missing the original eng...

Re: Trikes to consider for diesel transplants

Just spotted this thread. It's possible to convert a front-wheel-drive car to a more traditional trike, i.e. two wheels at the back and one at the front. A friend of mine has done this with a Peugeot 306 - in simple terms (cos I'm a simple sort of person :D ) he chopped the back of the car off behin...

Re: Mounting a different engine - help please, a bit urgent!

Just another update on this - the engine fitted is the 90bhp, 1767cc XUDT with intercooler. Its flywheel was reduced to fit within the Beetle bellhousing. She will certainly reach 90mph without any flat spots and with much-improved "twist and go" acceleration in top gear. Only a few minor ...

Re: Smart Tiger build thread

Hey Neil, thought I'd check in and see how you're getting on! My trike has been rebuilt and is pretty much three-quarters new. The 58bhp TUD engine has been replaced by a 90bhp 1.7 XUDT with turbo and intercooler - ooh, baby! Should be back on the road very soon, so will try to finally get down to y...

I have a spare alternator from a Pug 106 1.5D, but it's probably too big. Still, it's sitting in Antrim at the moment and is yours if you want it.

Re: Mounting a different engine - help please, a bit urgent!

Just a bit of an update on this - my mate had a Beetle flywheel lying around, so I'm back on the road for the summer (ha!) with just the 1.5XUD for now, and the Beetle flywheel is being adapted for the 1.8 engine. We'll try fitting it once the last chances of some decent weather have definitely pass...

Mounting a different engine - help please, a bit urgent!

Hi all, I have a trike with a 1.5 diesel engine out of a Peugeot 106 mounted onto the chassis & gearbox from a VW Beetle. A mate of mine is doing some work for me including new SIPS etc, but also including fitting a new-to-me engine - a 1.8 XUDT out of a 306. With an intercooler, that would take...

Guys, I'm running a trike with the 1.5 diesel engine from the Peugeot 106 (iron block, not the 1.4 alloy block engine that was fitted to the same car). Great wee engine, just need the right transmission. Because my machine's a trike I can look at car gearboxes as well. At the moment it's mated to a ...

Hi guys, Don't know whether you're interested in trikes as well as bikes. I have a trike powered by a 60 bhp 1.5 Peugeot diesel engine that came from a Peugeot 106. It's mated to a VW Beetle gearbox, which kind of limits the speed to about 85-90 mph - I'm going to try and get the gear ratios adjuste...
