Thinking diesel hardly rideable

I have been dreaming of a long distance trip on a sidecar. The issue I have been having is justifying the 30mpg I get on my Yamaha sidecar, so this brings us to the diesel option. I would heavily modify a frame to take a Harley 6 speed with reverce and a diesel engine along with a sidecar with a camper body. The issue I am having is coming up with a good engine to run in this setup.
