Speedometer and Tachometer solutions
So I was thinking it might be good idea to put all speedometer and tachometer solutions for our diesel bikes onto a list. (Also because I will need them...)
Speedometer:
Stock gear driven/electronic set up (do not change anything)
GPS
Bicycle speedometer (magnetic pickup from a wheel spoke)
Tachometer:
Stock gear driven from engine, if you've got one.
Inductive alternator pickup (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhLPAPZxNsM)
TinyTach injector line pickup (http://www.tinytach.com/installation-diesel.php)
Direct Alternator pickup (Not sure how this works...)
Bicycle speedometer transformed into tachometer (http://www.instructables.com/id/Tachome ... er-cycloc/)
So if anyone has any solutions please post them, I will add them to this post.

Far the easiest solution for a tach is to get an electronic tach off any bike and fit a prox switch, this can be signalled off anything on the external of the crankshaft ie. a woodruff key or a nut or a bolt, anything as long as its not stainless.

You mean signaling via an magnetic pick-up? You could use a bicycle speedometer to function as a tach, you just need to set the "tire size" to 268mm for MPH or 167mm for KPH.

I have a tiny tach but its slow to update, inconsistent, looks terrible on a motorcycle and the head unit isn't water resistant.

In one of my posts I mentioned using the same type of proximity switch as I use when I fit taximeters. By far the simplest is a Hall Effect transistor and a small magnet which can be fixed to any rotating part to either give miles/kilometres per hour or RPM depending on what type of display you use. One of the switches I use has an LED as a comfort light (if it flashes it shows 1. It is getting power. 2. It is pulsing/counting. 3. It is working.
The other main sensor is an ABS sensor which by design is waterproof and robust and used as the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) as well as the brakes.
As you can imagine there are lots of vehicle sensors that can be pressed into service for use on a diesel bike. If I can find the circuit I will post the speed pulse information.

Speaking of anything GPS, met modern smart phones have it. There are many free apps that will track your avg speed, distance and time. I just downloaded one called downhill social for my iPhone that I think will work well.

My tiny tach didn't last very long. My sendec rotating shaft tach has been very rugged.
