Hi all
I have an EGT gauge, and recently, 2 up , going up a long steep hill, my temps hit 550Deg C. Just wondering what the upper maximum for egt temps are? My probe is right in the middle of the exhaust stream.

Re: EGT Temps
To import the data and save someone else some time:
TIT is in before turbo, TOT is after turbo, in terms of positioning for the probe. Note this is for Turbo diesel engines, although it's advisable to stay below the TIT value for any diesel engine. The general opinion for turbo diesel engines is 850 °C TIT or about 680 °C TOT as the maximum advised temperature for sustained periods. Going above them is seen as damaging.

I assume the turbo value is higher than an NA, and as my probe is directly in the exhaust stream at the header, then im thinking I shouldnt go above about 600 deg c

I only know the American Farenheit measure but in that scale 1,250-1,300 is normally considered the maximum safe range. I wouldn't do sustained over 1,100 as it's still a little harder on the engine.

Sounds about right, 1100 deg F is around 600 degress celcius ,

There ya go! Unfortunately there's lots of BAD info out on the net from computer diesel experts making wild claims, "Aw, heck, my such-n-such diesel runs 1,500* all day long, no problem at all, doin' it fer years duhyuck..." and similar.
Yeah, hotshot, but WHERE'S YOUR PROBE LOCATED?!!! The old, 'Better safe than sorry' hits home when we're talking about pistons melting to blobs in 10-20 seconds, 'Oh, woop$....'

Re: EGT Temps
Yeah - a turbo-charged engine probably would run a little hotter due to the hotter incoming charge and reduced compression (and therefore expansion) ratio.
