I just ordered the radon display stupidly without really reading up on it. I swore I saw something that said the tach used mag pickups but turns out that's not true. It works with, and this is from the manual(don't have the devise yet), a TCI/CDI ignition or CB points ignition. Now I have no idea what this means. What I am wondering is, is it possible to rig something up with this so I can get an rpm read? Or am I stuck without that feature? It would be a bummer as that and the temperature sensor are the only reason I am purchasing such an item. It's a little tacky looking but if both those features will work than it is worth it to me.
You can see the manual from their website for info about wiring etc. at http://www.phitesla.com/downloads/RadonUsersManual.pdf

Re: Phitesla radon speed/tach
I've just had a scan over the manual in the link and It would be very easy to simulate a points / contact breaker TCI / CDI signal using a magnet on a rotating part and a magnetic sensor. The easiest that comes to mind is to get a pulsar coil from some random scrap engine and use that and a magnet on the flywheel / output shaft (however I'd be inclined to attach a pair of clamping zener diodes to be on the safe side) I wont go drawing up anything just now as I've just got in from the Big Knock and am very tired

I wonder if I could use the magnet setup from a bicycle speedometer as well. Either way sounds like I can figure it out with some friends here. Thanks for info Mouse.
I would hire you out for the job but money is tight especially since I keep spending it on stuff for the bike
It's all worth it when I'm finished though right? I can't wait to get on her and ride!

I built this circuit for my VW Scirocco 1.6TD autocross car. http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/CheapTri ... ndex.shtml The circuit simulates the signal from the gas engine coil. VW diesels with tach received a signal from the alternator.
I used the optical sensor but someplace I saw where you can substitute a Ford hall effect sensor on a trigger ring.

and for even more money dakota digital has some on a page http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/ ... cat287.htm but if money is tight, forget dakota digital

TedV, that's pretty sweet! A little more complicated than I need I think. If I can manage a magnet that would be less work and I don't want to spend $100 either. I was thinking more like $50 max and if it could be more like $20 even better I even have a bike computer I could sacrifice if i knew it could work.

Nice one Ted. Next time I disassemble my motor I will contemplate painting the flywheel
