AS some of you may be aware. my Electras big end failed on the Hamm trip. It is my belief that the oil pump is not pumping enough oil. The reason is that for a while on the trip it used to rattle very slightly when cold for about half to one minute then be quiet. as if it took a long while for the oil to reach the engine. When hot and stopping for petrol, it would tickover relatively quietly. But after I had refuelled an paid and made a comfort stop, on restarting the engine would rattle like a cement mixer with stones in it. After running the motor for a half to one minute it would quieten considerably, again a long time for oil to get to the bearing.
Is there any way to test the pumps capability?
I dont want to replace the crank only to have it die again in 10k miles. The bike is serviced properly and I usually run it at about 50-55mph indicated as it is most smooth there.

Larry, as I said in Hamm, you should do what everyone else does and swop this petrol engine for a Diesel unit.
This is an ideal opportunity for you now.
Take every bad sound rumbling out from your engine as a hint.
Secondly, you've posted outside all available rooms and I'm not about to create a new one for Petrol engines. Maybe a thread detailing specific examples of failures on petrol engines might be more appropriate? At least it might help convince other Enfield owners to come over to the 'dark side'

Re: Electra AVL engine oil system
Hi,
I allways have time for any type engine problem be it petrol or diesel. Ok some enfields around 2005(not sure about leanburn model but probably) have an oil pressure relief valve fitted in the crank flywheel (a sprung ball bearing in a seat). These are known to stick open and give problems, There's one fitted to mine and I await problems.I believe they were hastily dropped from production. If you have one of these ball valves it's most likley the primary cause.
John.
