Love the warning lamp holder - brilliant. Really enjoying watching your build come together Dougy, thanks for keeping the updates coming. Have you actually had the bike in motion yet?

Re: Hardley a Davidson diesel Project
Thanks guys, I've only used a lathe once or twice now an its actually quite easy, just time consuming ! It was more like art than engineering because I never used any measurements, I just went by what looked right. The next job is electrics and I cant do that 'it looks right' trick here however lol, I've made the loom and ran everything to under the seat, so I'm looking at a couple dozen loose ends at the mo, I'm waiting for inspiration now .......

Re: Hardley a Davidson diesel Project
Not properly yet mate, I got onto the guy making my rear sprocket last week and its a bit of a funny onion my back sprocket ! The cog bit has been made now but its got four big posts sticking out near the center that fit into the cush drive an he's just got to make these on the lathe and fit them and he'll send me it ! I must admit I'm bursting to give it a go, but Where ? theres no racing circuts by me so it looks like I've got to use the public road, it would be just my luck to get caught by PC Plod and get done for no tax insurance an mot then get it crushed lolDan J wrote:Love the warning lamp holder - brilliant. Re: Hardley a Davidson diesel Project
I got me fuel tank back from the engineers shop today, I gave him 6mm bundy pipe to use as the return, this goes from the right side of the tank right to the top of the left side, I made a little top hat to give the return a bit of foundation and he's done a top job tigging it.
The return saga actually cost me some sleep lol so hopefully I can put that behind me now .

Re: Hardley a Davidson diesel Project
I recieved my rear 54 tooth sprocket today from John Hemming sprockets from Bucknell, remember his name as I cant praise him enough, TOP man and a gent , to say I'm happy would be an understatment.
I done a bit more on the wireing, it starts off the button now , which is nice, and I also fitted the fuel lines and filter.
So this is where I'm upto as of tonight, unfortunatly the recessions hit downtown Southport and I'm having to make cutbacks (not bikes) but the sky telly, phone and broadband are going so no nightly diesal mooching for me ! I'll have to lookin at the library for a while Hope they dont mind me taking me beer in there

Re: Hardley a Davidson diesel Project
I've finally got around to test riding it with a digital speedo, I was quite impressed with my top speed of 43.5 MPH and with a bit more road I may have got even more out of her ( but not much more) maybee 45MPH ??? I'm happy with that though (I would have been pleased with 30MPH !) so I'll tear it down now and finnish of the welding ect, all in all a good day though

Who'd have thought this started out as simply a load of bits and an old frame? It's looking great Dougy - it'd be good to see it at the diesel rally in 2012 if you can make it?

More never ending painting this week ! I also had the front brake shoes re-lined and sent off the pitted forks to Rockrome in Crosby for hard chroming, I've finally got the Nato green spray paint I've been trying to find, and had to get rid of the broken rear shocks, I went for BSA C15 because of the price really but as it turns out there probley similar sized machines ..............need to find somewhere to get the seat recoverd next...

Re: Hardley a Davidson diesal Project
I'm a little confused here. Forgive my ignorance, but I was under the impression that in the UK you guys went by the metric system of KPH.
And your reference to going 43 MPH has me scratching my head.
And to further complicate things I love the British Version of Top Gear. (Never have gotten into the US Version.)
But they make all their reference to speed in MPH there too.
So my question is this. When you say MPH, is that the same MPH as used here in the United States based on 5,280 feet per mile? Or something different?
I have a Ducati and it has a Metric Speedometer and without my navagation computer I can never tell accuratly how fast I'm going. Which has almost gotten me some fines for speeding. Honestly! 100KPH is supposed to be 60 MPH, but how confusing it is do try and maintain 70 MPH when my speedo is in KPH. It does have MPH on the dial but the letters are so small my old eyes can't focus on them in less that 30 seconds. So they are pretty much useless!
I'm still enjoying your project and getting excited for you as it nears completion. But, I'm wondering is 43 mph is going to be fast enough for your roadways. Where I live here in the wide open spaces of North Central Texas it will only make you a Hood Ornament. Even our back country roads are posted 70 mph, and if you're not doing 75 or 80 your giong to get a car up your bun!
When I start building my Diesel Tiger my goal will be to be a top speed of 80 mph or it will be a waste of time. I live 13 miles from the closest town of size and 26 miles from a major City. And the roadways to them are 70 mph. So, if I plan on riding it outside my neighborhood it had better be able to keep up. There is this one little rough backroad that has a 55 mph speed limit on it, but it's twice as far to anywhere.
I realize that your engine size is going to limit your top speed, but the MPH/KPH mention I need an education on.

Re: Hardley a Davidson diesel Project
We work in MPH as well mate and there the same distance, Its the rest of Europe is KPH though I think, I did tour southern Ireland a few years ago on me bike, on the second day it dawned on us we did'nt know if the speed signs where KPH or MPH so we asked in the pub that night, they did'nt know iether !!! I made a point of not finding out iether, why ruin a good story, another time I went hiking in Sweden (a few years ago) and asked a copper how far the next town was, 7 miles he told us, do-able even for a bloater like me I thought...about ten hours later on when we where completely knackerd and hitched a lift did we find out there are seven, yes 7 english miles to one Swedish mile ! The bloody buggers very near done me in, you could have cooked a chicken down my kecks that day I dont mind telling youCurtis in Texas wrote:I'm a little confused here. I've heard the low speed of some bikes can be a bit of a problem Stateside but it wont be over here, well saying that they'd be up yeh backside on the motorway at 40MPH so I'd advise caution there, but everywhere else would be fine, though I might have to pull over every few miles to let the miles of traffic past

Re: Hardley a Davidson diesel Project
I'm very impatient when it comes to painting so I only use the roughest sandpaper an prime undercoat an topcoat in one go it always seems to stay on though, I turned my lightweight 1960's John Tickle headlight brackets back into really heavy jobbies by simply adding a 12" piece of 3mm pipe to them (mr Tickle will be turning in his grave ) I also sprayed exhaust paint onto the silencer, metalic black from Halfords, looks ok too and will probley stay on as long as I never start it.

I've given the engine a spruce up today, changed the oil an filter, changed quite a lot of fasteners for stainless ones, gave it a lick of Halfords finest engine paint AND...roll on tommorow
PS, that big starter ring in the last pic, should it be greased ?

Nope don't grease it all the dust and dirt that gets sucked in by the fan will stick to it and grind it to death. That said you could use a dry lube but it won't stay long. Projects looking really good keep up the good work!!
