Well the gearbox wasn't the first thing to go.
Yet again the battery blew. Replacement Harley battery now 200 quid. This will be the fourth battery that's blown.
So, I'm getting a Harley or Ultima gearbox, and I have capacitors to build a stronger battery, on order from America.
So buggered would be putting it mildly, for the time being anyway.

could the two be related? As in could something be vibrating more than a diesel bike typically gets such as missalignment in tranny....... which keeps blowing tranny's and shaking batteries to death? Were they Glass Mat Batteries or Lead Acid?

Yes, the engine has too much compression, the starter motor needs more power than the battery can give on a compression stroke. The occasional bump start, and jump in to gear when kick starting couldn't of helped the gearbox, but on the whole I think there maybe to much torque from the engine for the box to handle. A dog gear split in to many parts at the Big Knock, and an output shaft shattered at the Bulldog Bash.

The answer is more power to the starter motor, and change to a Harley type gearbox.

The battery was a genuine Harley gel, fully charged before the journey. :(

Gel batteries are sensitive to overcharging according to wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VRLA_battery
Might be why it went kebab on you? :| Shame tough I was looking forward to seeing as many bikes as I can as I'm still figuring out my own build. Minus one I guess...
Eitherway Harleys are high on torque right? So I'm guessing those boxes will hold.

Ian, bad luck indeed.

I have an Ultima box in the Tiger, they are available in 5 & 6 speed with either direct or overdrive top gear - gives you lots of options.

If cash is tight remember the 4 speed Enfield box could handle the 700 Interceptor's torque output and you can fit a cush drive clutch to soften the blows.

The way I see it, there's no difference between a 400 single and an 800 twin, unless perhaps the twin is slightly easier as it doesn't allow the crank to slow down too much before the next pulse.

Hi Dave, A 6 speed genuine overdrive, nice, beats the pants off my wide ratio. That should save some funds on a long journey. Funds are always tight, I'm a tight arse.
I bought a Norton AMC box but I wasn't impressed, it's back on ebay.
I do have a 5 speed Harley box (1340) but it's the wrong type, as it has the alloy molded brackets front and back which makes it way too long. I'm just waiting to find another box or case that bolts from underneath (brake out the welder again, Doh) and that's me sorted (fat chance).
I did try to find out what torque the Interceptor kicked out and at what revs but with no joy. My 954cc engine produces 50nm@2400rpm (max 4000+) no that it matters as I'm determined to change the box anyway. The clutch is belt driven so the shock should be down to a minimum.

Believe me the Interceptor produces a whole heap of torque, outstrips both the Triumph and Norton big twins, it actually hurts your arms.

Remember at the time of it's launch it was the fastest thing on the road.

If you ever open up an Enfield box you will understand why it's so strong, the gears are huge, I spent the extra wedge and added the close ratio gear set as they have a huge gap between 3 & 4.

Jeff & I just in from a pre rally spin out on the Ruggerfield & Tiger. I have fitted a new Shorai battery to the Tiger & disconnected the clock as I think it was the source of a parasitic drain. All good now I hope & will be on the boat Tuesday night :)

Last orders at the bar please gentlemen  I'll have a pint of what ever he's had :D
The Albion HG gears are chunky, but not as chunky as the (American) Indian Albion (K?) gears. I almost made the mistake of buying one.
I have eight Enfield boxes, six in bits (one broken lol), all waiting to be re-built and put in to bikes. Well that was the plan

Enjoy the journey, safe riding to all.

Up until a few weeks back I had a spare Albion with reverse for a Berkeley T60.

You could have built yourself a nice sidecar outfit with that one Ian, it didn't have the motorcycle shift on it either so you could have stuck with the big lever your fond of. :D

Right back on tread here.

Meet up location for the ride trough the Netherlands is directly outside of the ferry. At the 'Hoekse Vishandel'. A fish and chips stall.

All tough I'm only expecting Diesel Dave, anyone is allowed to join.

Have a look out for a crazy person standing next to a Honda Shadow VT600, that'll be me! :D

Back home safe and sound and yes old sludgy made it all the way under his own steam.

I think he's trying to tell me it's time for a rebuild after...

Exhaust fell off
Charging circuit failed
Rear brake failed
Horn fell off
And finally the tank split on the way home.

Apart from that he's running like a champ :D

Here's the clip's I shot at the Rally:

I got one where I'm waving off Dave but it isn't public yet as I didn't know if he minded. Do you Dave?

Doesn't bother me in the least.

There was a pretty big puddle on the deck, I have no idea where it came from ...

Allright clip is public. It wouldn't have anything to do with a leaky fuel tank now would it?...

I found that to be reasonably normal for an Enfield :) (awaiting parts for my Triumph) :)
