Belt clutch, where to get one?

Post by Anorak_ian »

Hi, before I go ahead and spend £200 on a second hand Norton Commando clutch (bit by bit), and convert it to Enfield use, can anyone tell me the cheapest place to get a belt drive clutch for the Enfield. A Bob Newby race clutch is hellish expensive from Hitchcock's mc's at £500+ tax, but it looks like Ruggerfield sell them for 600 euros almost £400, is that +tax?

I'm just trying to sus out my options before throwing my self in the deep end.

Ian :)

Belt drives

Post by Diesel Dave »

Just a word of caution over belt drive primarys on diesels.

'Flitzbitz' is an MZ powered by a Lombardini 440 with an Enfield 4 speeder and a primary drive, and has been known to strip teeth off the belt.

The Belt primary is very capable of supporting a tuned 660cc tuned Enfield Bullet motor but can't seem to cope with an 11Hp diesel even though the torque figure is much less.

I suspect this is to do with the RPM at which the torque is created. Diesels have big gobs os power in big pulses at low rpm and this 'shock' value seems to create problems for primary drives.

For choice I would take the Enfield primary duplex chain with a cush drive 4 speeder clutch, engine sprockets are available commercially to fit 1" keyway shafts and fit the duplex chain for the clutch.

Thanks for the advice.
I think your right about the cush drive, I have thought of this before. I asked Rinehart about a cush for my primary but he recons it isn't needed, but I think if his belt is spitting teeth there's something to be sorted.

I did think of using a 1940's 50's engine cush drive somehow. This is a static cam on the engine shaft, and a cam on the back of the non static sprocket, a spring pushes the sprocket in towards the engine in to the other cam. This was really designed for the simplex (single) chains they used in them old days.
Of course a cush on a clutch would be of good use as well, anything to take the thud out of it.
I'm sure the flitzbitz uses a 30mm wide belt, maybe if it had a 40mm and a larger engine pulley this may cure his problem. There are two kinds of belt; the cheapest is called a timing belt and HTD being the better of the two. Maybe belt quality’s at issue here?
Aggghhh, more stuff to boggle my brain with, humm, I think I'll get drunk. :D

Well I finaly got a belt clutch £180 second hand, 5 spare plates and a brand new belt. I decided this NEB speedway kit was a better option than the commando (hope), I'm now looking for a big engine sprocket as the clutch sprocket is masive.

Plenty of room in the center for modding and a cush drive too. :D

And somthing else I found interesting is this Triumph clutch center, it has a cush in it. Now if only we can find a engine pulley like that. :D
