Hi all,
I have made some further progress on my build as the engine and gearbox are now in the modified frame and am now at the point of plumbing in the radiator and sorting the wiring. The alternator has a seperate voltage control unit containing 2 coils and 6 connections and I am a little confused as to it's wiring. The alternator has one large terminal which connects direct to the battery+ and 3 wires coming from the back of the unit. I have traced these three wires through the engine loom and know where they connect into the voltage regulator so there are 3 more that I'm not sure of. One is a thick white wire isolated when power is off and the other a thick yellow earthing with the power off. The final wire is a thin black which I think is for the charge indicator lamp as it runs through some sort of resistor diode within the regulator. Any electrical wizzards out there? My intention is to use a push button for the heaters and to hold it down for so long before starting, I assume I will need to run the circuit through a relay if so maybe a timer relay would be better. Do I need to run the starter motor solenoid through a relay? as it seems to draw a lot of current? What minimum size battery can I get away with? Does the fuel lift pump require a relay? A lot of questions I know but all answers appreciated. One final point, the injector pump is mounted on slotted bolt holes ie. it can be turned so many degrees and I have no idea of its original position, I assume this is for fine tuning the injector timing any ideas on how to set it up? There is I believe a cold start solenoid on the pump wired into a water temperature sensor, does this also need a relay? A manual for this engine seems impossible to come by. Will post some pics later.

You can simplify things a lot by getting an alternator with internal regulator. The 480 watt Denso unit used on the Daihatsu D950 has 3-wires. You'll need a 50 amp relay for the glow plugs, regardless whether or not you use a timer. Depending on the starter model, a starter relay may not be required. The D950 doesn't require one. I use one anyway to make life easier for the ignition switch. The fuel cutoff solenoid on the injector pump won't require a relay.

Timing of the injector pump is done by mounting a dial indicator using a special attachment through a hole in the end of the injection pump.

Click on the thumbnail below to see a diagram showing the engine wiring for the Daihatsu D950. It should work for any engine.

This denso alternator is necessary for this engine as it is fitted with an oil pump at its rear to supply oil to the turbo so changing it is not an option.
