diesel rear drive unit

Post by dr pepper »

hi chaps i'm a newbie.

I'm planning a trike with with a kubota engine, and i know this is a question you lads have probably been asked a million times, however here goes.
my design so far uses a kubota d902, and a metro gearbox mounted 'inline' with a welded diff, final drive going to a xs1100 transfer box bolted direct to the rear wheel (single rear wheel, rear wheel drive).
I've seen a couple of designs floating about, what is the typical layout, it looks like a mod to the xs middle box to connect direct to a car wheel, with what looks like a sierra rear wheel bearing hub.

thanks, i found out from ratbike's that the rear drive unit is a xs1100 middle gearbox, with substantial mods, not sure what the mods are, so thats the next mission.

Is this a reverse trike with a single rear wheel?
Kubota Z482 which is plodding on with unnerving reliability. Three years so far.
1900 Diesel Bike being rebuilt with better clutch control.

Yep certainly is, before any suggestions of just using a metro or similar front subframe and have fwd, this is not my plan.
My design is to have 2 front wheels probably from a bedford rascal, as this uses a one piece susp/steering unit, and have a 2 side by side seat arrangement in between, then put the engine behind the seat, with transmission and rear wheel behind, on a swing arm.
there are various options, however the most logical so far, for ease of obtaining is a kubota d902 engine connected to a rover metro r65 gearbox, and a rear drive assy on the swingarm.
the rear drive i was asking about is actually a xs1100 middle gearbox, which has been modded, one end blanked with a plate and the other has a cx500 rear drive attached, adapted to a car wheel and fiesta front wheel bearing, not quite sure how, i still need to find this out.

hope that pretty much explains my intentions.

Would a Honda CB900 sub-transmission work in your layout? The advantage would be the integral 2 speed gearbox which could function as an overdrive (or double the available ratios in the existing trans). The picture in the example below shows the assembly upside down to how it's mounted in the bike. Don't be fooled by the price. Others are listed here in the states on Ebay at $9.95.

Or if you're producing power on par with a Jaguar V-12, you could keep the XS1100 gearbox (as in the example below) and dispense with the transmission altogether.

thanks for that, the cb900 is something i have never seen before, i thought the blade just had one box, i dont think that is of use to me though, as i want to fit the thing on the wheel itself, so it has to be compact.

the photo of the jag v12 is actually usefull, never seen as good a view as that before.

I saw this at the Bulldog last year, In my view it is just for display, the 90deg drive you could hold in your hand & the chain not as beefy as most bikes have, that said it was a good excersize in welding.

do you not think that the xs's 90 box isnt up to the job?, the xs1100 has a fair old torque output, one of the links above is one of these fastened to a v12 jag engine, that'll pull a bit.
its a small unit, however its sole purpose is to turn drive through 90, absorbed energy will be minimal with only 2 gears at a 1:1 ratio.
