Gavin from Peterborough

Post by gavinfdavies »

Hi guys, been about on here for a few weeks now. Got a '71 Bullet with a 13hp yanclone. Looking into turbo charging, and running on svo blended fuel. I do about 150 miles a day so fuel economy and reliability is important, as is being able to cruise at 70 - hence the turbo!

Welcome Gavin :D Doing that kind of mileage each day, well, a diesel bike sounds just the ticket :D Keeping up with traffic speed is important but you'd be running flat out and at the top of the rev range, if you get a turbo to work well on a single cylinder bike that is. It might be too much for the clone? I've run a big 850 twin continuously and it's comfortable at 55-60 with its theoretical limit being 68mph given the 3800 rev limit. That's not a clone but a Ruggerini MD 191.

Yes, welcome, Gavin! Hope all the best on your build project.

If and when I ever do my build I'm also planning turbo, but with an intercooler. The I/C sure makes a huge difference on my diesel-powered truck, allowing me to tweak the fuel much higher and run a whole lot harder on hills etc.

Welcome to the black cloud club. I'm with Stuart there is no replacement for displacement. If you plan on using a 13hp single blown enough to cruise at 70mph. You may consider some Kevlar undewear. I turboed mine more to increase efficiency not so much for increased speed. My 812cc V twin is rated at 15hp@3600rpm and max continuous is 14hp@3000. I bought the engine as a 20hp which its not. You may find yours can only do 10-11hp continuously. Mine has always been able to go 70mph the differance is it will now go that fast without a cloud of black smoke behind me. I know if I choose to run the engine this hard something will give. It is a 50-55 mph machine all day long. It will run faster which is handy in traffic and for passing.
