Just how related are the small aircooled diesels? Of course they will all be "similar" due to the laws of physics, production methods and price.
However the Hatz 2G40, Ruggerini RD211 and the Lombardini 12LD475-2 look like they all could have ran down the same production line. And have many parts interchange?
It's tough finding these engines used in North America. Mostly just water cooled Kubota and Yanmars from lawn tractors, skid steers and shipping container reefers.

I have only experience with the Ruggerini 211 because that is the one I ended up getting for my project. I searched all the ones you mentioned and it came down to which one was the best deal when I had the cash.
After I purchased the 211 I found out that some of the parts for it are really hard to get. Luckily I have been able to find what I have needed thusfar but that is a concern.
Both the Lombardini and the Hatz 2g40 are still used in some commerical mowers and that may help replacement part availabilty.
As far as interchanging parts, I wouldn't do it.
I read an internet rumor that Lombardini was going to or had purchased Ruggerini so that Ruggerini was no more but have been unable to confirm.

I can say that the ACME MOTORI 1,300cc and the HATZ G30 have almost identical crank cases. The cylinders are bigger on the ACME MOTORI and the manifolds are all on one side where the HATZ has a cross flow head.
I was told the Lombardini was almost the same as the HATZ but between the G30 and G40 HATZ in displacement.
I'm starting to think that HATZ liceneced the design to the Itilians.

Kohler bought Lombardini (and ruggerini by default i suppose). had to source parts for my lombardini and had a very difficult time. and at $400 USD for a fuel shutoff solenoid, thinking killing it by hand is just fine.

I looked into this for quite a while. I'm not sure which way the license agreement went, but the main difference appears to be that the Lombardinin / Ruggerini engine (same company now) has inlet & exhaust ports on the same side of the cylinder head, whilst the Hatz has them opposite sides...

Hi,
AFAIK
- Hatz bought a Crankshaft and a Crankcase from Ruggerini and added their own Piston rod/piston and cylinders for the 2G40. (this is what the Ruggerini people told me)
- Ruggerini has its RD210/RD211
- Lombardini bought Ruggerini and integrated all ruggerini engines in their own product line. So the RD210 is also available as 12LD475-2
best regards
Hans
