Hi All,
I think this is the appropriate section to post my engine queries rather than in introduction section. In India there is not much engine options. The is a Lombardini 482cc 12Hp engine used in sub 1 tonner. Its a integrated unit contains clutch, gear box, differential, half shafts as a single unit. Can we alter this engine to get rid of gearbox, differential and shafts to fit into royal enfield motorbike. Water cooled version is also available.

Re: Possible engine alteration for lombardini power pack
A possible option might be to weld the internals of the gear box too:
. lock the differential so it allways drives one axle (you choose axle before welding)
. remove and fix a blank plate one axle shaft.
you can then use that axle shaft you left on the engine as a fixed drive to power the enfield tranny box or to power a jackshaft which powers the Enfield tranny.
Might give you an over / underdrive because you may still have the gears of the engines tranny working along with the gears of the enfield box.
question is the size of the engine with fixed tranny. Does it make it too long for this project?

Neat engine!
Vote #2 for welding the differential and having a complete power packedge in one unit. Do the axles turn the same way as the engine or the opposite way?

Re: Possible engine alteration for lombardini power pack
I like this little engine and gearbox! That would be a nice setup for a homebuilt trike (3 wheeler) or small high-miles-per-gallon car that some people are building here in the US.
Someone could make a good business out of buying engines like this, shipping them to the US and selling them along with spares.

I will not use this tranny if I got hold of the engine. I have not seen personally. This engine is being used in Piaggio 3 wheel goods carrier. Top speed of being 60kmph.
Couple of other engine options
Kubota 412 or 499cc 8 , 9.5 hp engines. But its bit bulky and vibrates a lot
Greaves 425CC 7.5 hp bigger brother of greaves 325 used in taurus.
Force Motors M4 14 Hp 600 cc water cooled OM 616 derived engine.
If nothing works out I will be re-doing the 325cc greaves engine.

Re: Possible engine alteration for lombardini power pack
Vijay, in order to keep the conversion manageable.......
I'd go for the Greaves unit, the 400 has the same crankcase dimensions as the original 325 so the engine mountings can be used.
If you have access to a REALLY trustworthy welder then shorten the pushrod side of the rockers by a hacksaw blade width and weld them back together to give you 9.5mm valve lift.
Carefully measure the head to piston clearance with a ring of solder and ease the motor over compression just once, then get the correct copper ring gasket to close up the gap to 0.6mm (your big end and gudgeon pin must be in very good order otherwise it will hit the head at speed.
Make sure all the driveline is as effecient as possible, thin the gearbox grease down with some 80 weight gear oil, replace the oil bath air cleaner with the std bullet one by adding a corrugated pipe between the intake and the square box.
Make sure the regulator is adjusted down so that it only just slightly smokes at full throttle any more than this and it will seize.
If you can get an oil treatment called activ8 then use this on all the driveline components, it's very expensive but the treatment lasts for 20k miles.
If you can get your hands on a close ratio gearset for the gearbox then this makes a big difference when hillclimbing.
This should give you a genuine 90kph machine that can hold this speed all day long and will occasionally top 100 with a slight downhill or tailwind. (If reading a bullet speedometer then add 15kph as they are useless at reading a true speed)
These are all my Lombardini tuning secrets I've just given away.
