Re: 406cc running a little rich

Like CoachGeo said, Johnny, and don't forget it's a mixture of air & fuel. I'd check first for any restriction to air flow as filters certainly do get dirty, clogged, restricted etc. Make it easy on yourself before you make it hard on yourself

Re: XR500 Diesel Bike Farymann 43F

Lastly, I know from the personal experience of adding a Cummins 4BT/NV4500 to my 46 year old Dodge Town Wagon: it's far more important to get my drive system, suspension and handling RIGHT and LEARN to DRIVE IT than to try to make the assembled parts do what they were never designed for or capable ...

Re: XR500 Diesel Bike Farymann 43F

I dunno XLerate, that combination of transverse 3-4 cyl with a low CG on "extremely challenging narrow mountain roads" could win you the distinction of being the only human known to "lowside" on a diesel flywheel. Be sure to post the video. Well, let's see here: I didn't say how ...

Re: XR500 Diesel Bike Farymann 43F

I've got some comments, don't know how useful they'll be. I'm planning to shove a 3-4 cyl diesel transverse into my Kawi, spinning a Harley 6 spd with chain drive to rear wheel, possibly selectable for 2WD in a sidecar build. This for long distance touring but also for local short trips on extemely ...

Re: How was your Diesel Motorcycle weekend?

Thanks for the info, Coach! Yeah these Kubota's are becoming available in Cali thanks to a crackdown on pollution regs. This one's a 4 cylinder, I think about 2.3 L, so it would build a good cruiser bike with maybe a Harley 5 spd? Borderline too big, but with a hack the weight and balance etc. is al...

Re: Diesel Dave....... what is that??

That's one great machine there! Before I was given my current project bike, a '96 KZ1000P-15 by a recently and sadly departed friend, I was given an '86 Dodge Omni FWD car by another friend. The earliest Dodge Omni's were available with a VW Diesel! My plan had been to fab up a tube chassis, yank th...

Re: How was your Diesel Motorcycle weekend?

My day was absolutely dreamy! Unfortunately it wasn't anything more than that, as usual. All I have right now is the dream, the project bike ['96 KZ1000P-15 Police bike] most of the stuff needed to build a sidecar rig and a plan that includes diesel. I may have located an engine out of a freezer uni...

Well HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dave! Congratulations on your find, rare indeed. Re: Shaft drive dilemma

Might look into reversing rotation of the engine? That was commonly done on spark-fired IC engines such as VW for use in experimental aircraft. Should be even easier with a diesel if the injection pump will cooperate.

NOTE: There's another way rather than using a pick or probbe to move innermost reinforcement piece. Drill 1 extra hole a few inches beyond where the inner reinforcement tube will end up. Spot weld a long piece of wire to the inside of reinforcement tube at one end, with wire extending through tube a...

You've requested no comments about your welds. My apologies but I must comment and risk offending you. I'd like for you to be around here for a long time, rather than just until your first serious ride. I've been welding since 1965. A motorcycle frame is no place to learn welding. They're more diffi...

Re: Lubricating a honda trans without pressure

Hmmm, not convinced. I think it'd be hard to ever know what you'd actually got / what was going on in there. If the engine over-heated or the oil produced too much vapour could you get a runaway engine also? Particularly when the clutch starts thrashing harder with a hot engine? Why not just instal...

Interesting. Sorry, I don't have an answer to your questions. Do you have more pics and the details of cutting down this CB400 Honda engine into a trans only? Can't see much in the pictures posted and focus doesn't allow any detail when zoomed larger. Some more info on the trans might help with some...

Might be confusing Amps with Watts there? Volts X Amps = Watts, so 12 Volts X 15 Amp alternator = 180 Watt output on alternator.

Re: Onan Flat Twin?

I'd not heard of an engine manufacturer called Onan. Those with a biblical education might recall Onan as the old-testament character famous for 'spilling his seed on the ground' - thus rendering the term 'Onanist' a slightly pompous synonym for 'w*nker' FYI aside from Onan's predeliction...

Re: Smallest lightest engine?

Just adding a jackshaft won't reverse rotation, it stays the same rotation on left and right sides. Hard to explain in text: A sprocket runs in reverse direction according to being driven from inner or outer side of chain between two other sprockets. You can run a chain drive from engine sprocket to...

Re: MD190 upping 2400 revs to 3600rpm+

Just an aside comment here: in some cases like the Bosch VE pump if you change the top governed speed by changing the governor spring it can also change the entire fuel curve. That is, while you can sometimes gain top end power along with higher rpm's you can also lose some bottom end fueling and po...

Re: Building a bike with an DM950TD

Expansion vessel? Please explain it's purpose in this build? Just guessing but such a thing is normally used in a closed cooling system, where the radiator cap doesn't have the common pressure pop-off lever. Instead as water heats and expands it overflows into expansion tank and remains there until...

After your fuel efficiency mods and upgrades you can focus on setting up the engine's fuel pump timing, injectors, gear ratios to run in the 'sweet spot' for your most frequent driving conditions. I've put a Cummins 4BTA w/ NV4500 5sp, DANA 60HD 4.1 rearend in my big old '67 Dodge truck [7,200 lbs] ...

Skinny vinyl tubing over a piece of coat hanger might do it? Also clear fingernail polish can serve as an insulator wire coating. If ...

Re: Disappointing turbo performance

The total tuned length of the exhaust tract is going to have an effect on how strong it runs too. The engine depends on the proper exhuast length to cause a low pressure reversion wave in pipe to help pull exhaust to exit. Too short a pipe can make the exhaust fight to escape. I've got the correct l...
